- Grace Duan was presented with the Bob Mueller Award. Grace is a 7th grader at Slauson Middle School who was chosen from a large pool
of applicants. Linda Woodland, Fran
Jelinek and Barbara Mueller serve as members of
the selections committee.
- Tris Coffin reported that
the spring 2004 tennis program for 6th graders was
significantly enhanced by the addition of seven high school players who
assisted in the coaching. All six
public middle schools participated.
Volunteers will again be needed in spring 2005.
- Kyla Rowe and Nurit Weizman, Huron High
School students, presented a proposal for a one-week summer camp in
2005. The participants would be
selected from students in the middle school program; a goal is to promote
high school tennis. The camp would
be at no cost to the participants and, if possible, all would receive
tennis racquets. The camp would be
for 2 hours each day and would have a 1 coach for each 4
participants. Snacks will be
included. There was discussion
about the proposal and unanimous support to proceed.
- Barbara Mueller
reported 50 total paid members in 2004:
5 corporate, 24 families, 20 individuals and 1 junior.
- Barbara Wasneski happily reported that the AAACTA had formally
been awarded non-profit 501(c)(3) tax status from the Internal Revenue
Service.
- Linda Woodland
distributed a 2004 City Tournament Report.
Participation was virtually unchanged from 2003 with 312 adults and
123 juniors playing. The
tournaments generated net income of $2,100. Sponsor’s monetary donations were
$1,550, including two “champion” sponsors @ $500 each: Elastizell
Corporation of America and The Olive Garden Italian Restaurant.
- The University of
Michigan hosted a Men’s Regional ITA Tournament and the ITA National
Championships this fall. Both were
successful in large part due to the AAACTA volunteers who assisted. Jon Fischer, director of the Girls 16
National Tournament to be held Thanksgiving weekend, reported that the
tournament needed three things: 1)
monetary donations, 2) volunteers, and 3) spectators. He indicated that the tournament had
drawn a strong field this year. Clare
North is putting together a free clinic for elementary and middle school
students for Saturday afternoon.
- There was significant
discussion about a future wheelchair tennis tournament in Ann Arbor. Tris Coffin
and Daniel Heumann will meet to formulate plans.
- The implementation of
an executive director position was discussed and a proposed job
description was distributed. There
was discussion and unanimous support to proceed.
- There being no further
business, the meeting was adjourned at 8:45 pm.
Respectfully
submitted,
Helen
