Vineet Maheshwary's Statement of purpose for Graduate studies I am excited about a career that helps me pursue my interest in science and provides me with challenging opportunities to solve technological problems in order to gain the satisfaction of enhancing and fulfilling my potential. I am also motivated by the challenges and rewards of entrepreneurship. Harnessing science and technology to create prosperity through ecologically sustainable means is my mission. Entrepreneurial ventures that result from my research and expertise that help me achieve this purpose would engage me most thoroughly. I have three years of experience in software engineering, working collaboratively in teams spread across the globe. The company I worked for recruits engineering graduates and only hires 1.5% from a large pool of applicants. Hiring decisions are based on one’s ability to rapidly learn new technologies for executing projects in order to meet the demands of a competitive, global marketplace. While there I developed customized software used by Fortune 500 companies. I have a passion for trying to understand principles and applying them creatively for beneficial causes. My senior year engineering design project allowed me to do just this.My idea for the project was inspired by a pump that lifted ground water and was powered solely by children playing on a see-saw. I then set out to develop a manually powered, low-cost pump to lift the ground water in order to fulfill a need in underdeveloped regions, and so the pump could be fabricated locally in such places. I extensively looked for water lifting mechanisms originating since Archimedes’ time, discovering an incredibly amazing variety of devices. I then reflected on their merits. This process helped diminish my preconceptions so I could think more imaginatively. The desire to develop a means that could eliminate the drudgery for a child pumping water to meet domestic needs was a powerful driver. I succeeded in synthesizing a novel device that satisfied the need, and I wanted to be sure it reached its market. With a teammate, we came up with a fabrication so the pump could be made for less than $10 (in India) from parts and machining processes widely available. This example is the kind of intense exploration, examination, and creative application for a beneficial cause that truly inspires and drives me. The graduate program in mechanical engineering at the University of Michigan will lead me to developing the knowledge and skills necessary to become a leader in the product development industry, especially in regard to sustainability. Some of the areas that interest me include fluid and thermal systems design, mechanisms design, design optimization, electromechanical system design, biomechanics, eco-design, and global product development. With a record of leadership, sensitivity to issues of sustainable development, and a feeling of responsibility to work towards the development of my country, I am confident that my studies here at the University of Michigan will help me attain my goals. |
