Due to the communicative nature of language, a language class relies very heavily on group learning and activities. In addition, student's success as a language learner is directly dependent on the consistent effort he or she applies to the study and practice of language skills and to the careful attention he or she give to all course requirements and policies. Course requirements are designed for the benefit of all students and try to promote productive learning, to ensure success and to minimize disruption in the flow of class activities.
- Attendance.
Class participation is critical for your success in this course. Absences will affect your grade as follows:Number of classes missed Effect on your Grade 1-4 None 5-10 Reduce your attendance grade by 1/3 11-15 Your attendance grade will be "E" 16 - more You will receive a failing grade in the course Note: Three late arrivals in class are converted into an unexcused absence. If class is missed due to medical reasons, religious holidays or for family emergency, please notify your instructors in advance (vbesproz@umich.edu).
- Homework.
:: Written practice is important in learning any languages.
:: You will have written homework assignment almost daily.
:: Your instructor will answer any questions you have on homework.
:: Your homework must be handed in before you start class.
:: No late work is accepted.
:: If you cannot make it to class on a particular day, or didn't bring your homework with you, you may turn in your assignment by 4:00 p.m. on that day, and leave it in your instructor's mailbox.
:: Homework will be graded on "check" system:

:: v (good)
:: - (unsatisfactory)
:: Your homework includes not only written exercises.
:: It includes: out loud reading practice vocabulary and grammar study listening comprehension - Class participation.
You will receive a daily oral work assessment that reflects both the quantity and quality of your speech in Russian:

:: v (student is partially prepared)
:: - (students is unprepared) - Tests and quizzes.
There are seven chapter tests, six quizzes, oral project, and final exam.
- Minimum 2 hours a week of audio work are strongly encouraged.
