Democratic Senate Majority Leader Hits Pay Dirt

In a statement to Wisconsin Republicans, Dick Cheney accused Democrats of advancing a "strategy of resignation and defeatism in the face of determined enemies."

"As we make our case to the voters in this election season, it's vital to keep issues of national security at the top of the agenda."

Sen. Harry Reid (D) Nev. said:

"When the U.S. intelligence community confirmed that America is losing the war on terror because of Bush failures in Iraq, this White House lost all credibility on matters of national security. With Iraq in a civil war, Afghanistan moving backwards and our own borders unsecured, it's clear George Bush and Dick Cheney are desperate to hide their record and distort the truth."

Bingo. Iraq is producing more terrorists than Bush's "Fight'm There So We Don't Have to Fight'm Here" strategy can handle. Forget the arguments about cut and run, about being weenies too wimpy to fight. The point is that the fighting in Iraq is counter-productive (as if we didn't know that already.) Smart soldiers know when to stop fighting. Their civilian superiors could learn a thing or two.

Peter Gabriel | Solsbury Hill

Climbing up on Solsbury Hill
I could see the city light
Wind was blowing, time stood still
Eagle flew out of the night
He was something to observe
Came in close, I heard a voice
Standing stretching every nerve
Had to listen had no choice
I did not believe the information
(I) just had to trust imagination
My heart going boom boom boom
"Son," he said "Grab your things,
I've come to take you home."

To keep in silence I resigned
My friends would think I was a nut
Turning water into wine
Open doors would soon be shut
So I went from day to day
Tho' my life was in a rut
'Til I thought of what I'd say
Which connection I should cut
I was feeling part of the scenery
I walked right out of the machinery
My heart going boom boom boom
"Hey" he said "Grab your things
I've come to take you home."
(Back home.)

When illusion spin her net
I'm never where I want to be
And liberty she pirouette
When I think that I am free
Watched by empty silhouettes
Who close their eyes but still can see
No one taught them etiquette
I will show another me
Today I don't need a replacement
I'll tell them what the smile on my face meant
My heart going boom boom boom
"Hey" I said "You can keep my things,
they've come to take me home."

DeVos: Teach Creationism

If you ever wondered just how far toward the religious right Michigan would go under Dick DeVos, wonder no more. DeVos says that "intelligent design" should be taught in the public schools. ID is merely a new name for creationism; it doesn't specify the religion of the creator, which supposedly makes ID not a religious teaching. Horsefeathers. A federal judge in Pennsylvania has already established in a thoroughly-documented decision that teaching ID is teaching religion. DeVos can't possibly insert ID into Michigan's curriculum, so why would he even bring it up?

To fire up the religious right, maybe? Maybe. :-)

U-M moves ahead with energy research site

The Michigan Memorial - Phoenix Energy Institute is the next incarnation of the Michigan Memorial - Phoenix Project, where I have worked for the last 20 years. I'm pleased that the U decided to continue the only WWII memorial on campus, which is the "Michigan Memorial" part of the title.

Predictably, I am somewhat less pleased at the change in the "Phoenix Project," which was dedicated solely to the peaceful uses of atomic energy for the benefit of humankind, to the "Phoenix Energy Institute" which seeks to spin off companies who deal in alternative fuels.

Coincidentally, my last day at the Phoenix Lab is Friday, Sept. 22, the final day of a 20-year relationship. I wish I could say that my departure is based on something lofty, but the truth is that my skill set is no longer needed, and won't be needed in the forseeable future. My supervisor has given me every benefit under these circumstances, for which I am tremendously grateful.

The near-sighted, narrow-minded U-M administration who wanted the FNR gone has won.

But humanity has lost a unique resource.

May big business reign. Amen.

Keith Olbermann: This Hole in the Ground

Crooks and Liars has the video of Keith Olbermann's special commentary on Countdown. Olbermann, one of the best writers on television, goes to the heart of the last five years in politics -- the exploitation of 9/11 by the president -- and reminds us afresh of how dispicable that is.

Warning: you may find yourself cheering afterward.

And You Were Worried About Drivers With Cell Phones.

Ironically, the driver was en route to his Citroen dealership to have them work on the recalled penis-pump option.

Clearly, we've established a limit on how much fun driving should be. Commuters, please return to your sudokus and DVDs.

The Ypsisphere

Contradicting a local blogger, I say that Ypsilanti has a thriving blogosphere -- an Ypsisphere, if you will. Most of the current members of the Ypsisphere can be found in the local blog roll of Ypsi bloggers. Considering that these same bloggers have been credited with creating an echo chamber of opinion in the recent mayoral primary, I say that we deserve a name reflecting our supposed importance. Yay, Ypsisphere!

I propose that the Ypsisphere include all Ypsilanti-based blogs, regardless of their political leanings.

All in favor say "aye"!

Open Letter to ABC: Don't Airbrush 9/11

This takes some cojones, I have to say: make a movie that professes to be historically accurate (but is really a political tool), inject it into the national bloodstream on a major TV network, then inculcate children in the history that you want them to learn.

Absolutely Orwellian.

Vent Here.

A few of Mark Maynard's readers have questions about my veracity. Rather than having them question me (as though I weren't in the room over on mm.com), I thought I'd provide a place for them here. Ask away, me hearties, and I'll tell you no lies.

Source of Seething Hatred Revealed

I came into possession of a letter to Steve Pierce, ostensibly from Penny Schreiber, wife of the Ypsilanti mayoral candidate. If the letter were actually written by Ms. Schreiber, the irrational hatred it contains would explain a lot about the negativity of Paul's recent primary campaign.

This afternoon I called Penny, introduced myself, and asked her if she wrote the letter.

"Yes, I wrote it. Why would I sign it if I didn't write it?" Penny said.

"Well, I didn't know whether you signed it even though your name is on it. That's why I'm calling," I explained.

"Why wouldn't I sign it? Of course I wrote it."

"Thank you."

In our conversation, which lasted maybe two minutes, Ms. Schreiber seemed furious that anyone would question her opinion.

"Are you one of those bloggers?"

"Yes, as a matter of fact I am," I said.

"Well, let me tell you, I'm a journalist and I think that bloggers are idiots."

"I see."

"Yes. All of them."

Ms. Schreiber believes that people (she, and others in the Schreiber campaign) are being attacked merely for expressing their opinions. I told her that she can express any opinion she wants, but she can expect to defend it.

"No I don't," she said. "I don't have to defend it."

"Well, sure you do," I said.

"No I don't."

She said good-bye, as did I, and our conversation was over.

Some of you will think me a lout for publishing Ms. Schreiber's letter. It is my opinion, however (and I imagine I'll have to defend it) that the irrational hatred of Steve Pierce amply demonstrated by Paul's campaign has hurt this city. Worse, these fanatics feel morally justified in dividing Ypsilanti, as Karl Rove does in dividing the nation. Schreiber's campaign rarely challenged Steve's ideas. When they did so, it was to attack Steve's character (see the ridiculously divisive anti-Township flyers for one example) because he proposed more cooperation between the city and the township.

So, Ms. Schreiber writes to Steve saying that he must have a thin skin if he thinks the campaign was negative. In the process, she shows just how venal and hateful the campaign truly was. Thanks for making my point, Penny.

In short, the irrational hatred and ends-justifying-means spirit that helped Paul Schrieber win the primary must be aired out. Sunlight is the best disinfectant.

Moreover, Paul Schreiber owes Steve Pierce a public apology. He must take responsibility for the hate that was spewed in his name, perhaps in a letter to the editor of the Courier, or some similar venue. Without an apology -- and a commitment to keep his supporters quiet -- Paul has no chance of getting the cooperation that Ypsilanti needs to move forward. Not before 2020, anyway.

Is Paul Schreiber a uniter or a divider? I hope he's a uniter.

Without further ado, I offer Penny Schreiber's letter to Steve Pierce.

Perhaps I'll have deconstruction of the letter in a future post.

John Mueller | The Myth of the Omnipresent Enemy

Mueller patiently debunks the al Qaeda fear mongering. Most welcome is his comparison of Americans' fear of the Japanese after Pearl Harbor and fear of Communists -- two threats that were wildly exploited.

If only Americans would understand him.

The life and times of Steve Irwin

Our family is mourning the Crocodile Hunter, who died in a freak accident with a stingray off the Great Barrier Reef.
