Actually, they had a bunch of reasons. None was honest or fact-based, though. Let's see... there was the WMD rationale, the bring democracy to the Middle East rationale, the remove the threat to Saddam's neighbors rationale and the Butcher of Baghdad/inhumane treatment of citizens rationale. I'll have to check; I might have missed one or two.
They were lousy, lie-ridden, logically fallacial reasons, but hey -- you go to war with the propaganda you've got. :-)
Now that we've reached 2,000 military deaths and $1 billion a week in expenses with no clear exit strategy, maybe people will begin to see that they were manipulated. Maybe? Please?
