Weekend Update

Saturday Night at Ypsi High

I was blown away by the high school production of The Music Man. It was so full of talent and professionalism that I almost forgot I was watching high school students. Let me just call it delightful because I've been smiling about it for more than 24 hours.

Among all the bright stars who sang and danced and acted across that stage, I must single out Josh Glassman, Prof. Harold Hill, as the brightest star. I believe Josh has a stage and/or film career ahead of him--if he chooses to grow in that direction. He's also sharp academically and talented on the viola (according to his viola teacher, that is.) I look forward to watching his meteoric rise, regardless of what he chooses to do.

Sunday Afternoon at the Showcase Cinemas

We loved Robots. From the simple "idealistic small-town boy makes good in the big city" plot and the funny star turns through the heart-stopping animation, Robots kills. I don't care whether you have kids -- you will enjoy this film. If Robots is converted to Imax, you'll find me somewhere in line.

Shaving 101

Tonight I taught Andrew a bit about shaving:
  1. Lubricate your beard well with shaving gel.
  2. Always pull the razor straight.
  3. Never radically change the direction of the razor while it is in contact with your skin.
  4. Rinse the razor in warm water.
  5. Never leave a dirty sink for your mother.
Aren't we getting old.

Happened to hear from Katie O'Neal, who played Marion Paroo in the YHS production of "Music Man," Eric, and I realize that I meant to let you know that, as much as I agree with and appreciate your comments about Josh, she really was a big star of the show, as well. It was her beautiful singing that made me tear up --still does -- every time. Anyone who wants to hear more of all these fine singers should reserve the date of May 26 to come hear the YHS Choirs in concert. Robert Glassman, Woods Rd. Ypsi

Katie has such a beautiful voice, so strong and so pure. I can't remember which song it was that she soloed and took my breath away. I'll put the choir performance on my calendar. Thanks!

Pardon me, Eric, if you already got this one, but I don't see it posted so I am trying to resend it here. RG.
The opening night crowd for a stunning performance of Guys and Dolls at the High School was so disappointing that members of the cast are out tonight putting up posters around town. I thought that a more effective way to give these young people the sold-out houses that they work so hard for and deserve to get is to make sure that as many people as you know will come with you to the remaining performances Friday evening at 7:30 and Saturday afternoon at 2:00 and again Saturday evening at 7:30 PM. Any of you who saw tonight's performance will know what I mean. I have already written to neighborhood blogger Eric 3.0 and to the Ann Arbor News, which never gives YHS Drama productions any significant notice. I include a copy of the blog posting below in case anyone wants some ideas. My praise, of course, has less public value than yours because my son, Joshua, stops the show with a rendition of "Sit Down, You're Rockin' the Boat" and the title theme that were as good as any professional production. Returning seniors Katie ONeal and Travis Thomas join newcomers Forest Osborne and Kenyatta Barbee in the starring roles. It is Barbee who walks away with "A Star Is Born" honors this year, totally blowing away all comers in her first show, as far as I know, playing the comic and vocally demanding role of Miss Adelaide. The poise and sense of humor that she conveys over the footlights totally belie her tender years. But don't take my word for it. Bring someone by the hand and fill the auditorium at the high school to the rafters and listen to them ring! Robert Glassman 484-2195
The blog posting:
You need to get everyone you can reach to go see Ypsi High School's production of Guys and Dolls Friday night April 7 and Saturday afternoon and evening, April 8. Those of you who remember the triumph of The Music Man last spring will be blown away by the power and professionalism of this performance on all levels. Last years' star, neighborhood denizen Josh Glassman (my son), plays Nicely Nicely Johnson and stops the show in the second act, leading a rousing rendition of "Sit Down, You're Rocking the Boat." Just as last year a star was born, again this year an up-and-coming sophomore sweeps you off your feet in the person of the totally professional and achingly funny Kenyatta Barbee, in her first show, I believe, starring as Miss Adelaide. Returning from last year's triumph as Marion the Librarian is Katie ONeal as Sarah Brown, sharing the role with neighborhood resident Amelia Rowley, who will perform the role Friday evening and Saturday matinee. Travis Thomas owns the stage as the totally suave Sky Masterson and newcomer Forest Osborne comes through in fine fashion as the lovable schlemiel Nathan Detroit. The student-choreographed production numbers were nimble and ably abetted by a fine-sounding pit orchestra led by Courtney Snyder. Director Michelle Peet and vocal director Nichole Brenna deserve accolades for working dramatic, technical and vocal magic not often seen in a public school production. I urge anyone who saw the show Thursday night to IMMEDIATELY EMAIL a letter to the Ann Arbor News so that it can get into Firday's or Saturday's paper because the kids deserve to have sold-out houses at every performance. I can write one, but I would be accused of parental bias. Best would be if it came from someone not connected with Ypsi, let alone with the show. Thanks for your continued support. Yours, Robert Glassman 911 Woods Road, Ypsilanti.

I've found that I like shaving more when I have cool stuff to do it with. Like a Shaving Mug.
