Giulio Racah (1909-1965)
Giulio Racah was born in Florence, Italy. He received a doctorate in physics from the University of Florence in 1930. He emigrated to Palestine in 1939 and joined the Hebrew University of Jerusalem as Professor of Theoretical Physics. Racah served as the only Scientific Military Commander in the War of Independence.
Most of Giulio Racah's research focused on quantum physics and atomic spectroscopy. His honors are many; including honorary memberships to academies and an honor bestowed by the International Astronomy Association: a crater was named in Racah's memory.
