I received my Ph.D. degree in Architecture from the University of Michigan in 2004, after finishing a dissertation that drew upon information from Architecture, Design Methods, Cognitive Psychology, and Computer Science. While I was at the U of M, I also got to have some fun with digital fabrication (see my portfolio for some examples -- even though I once interviewed with Gehry Technologies, my own work probably falls about as far from Frank Gehry's as it's possible to get). I then lectured at the University of Michigan Taubman College of Architecture + Urban Planning for an academic year, teaching Arch. 411, CAD Fundamentals I. Following this, I worked as an Application Engineer at AEC CADCON, a Value Added Reseller of Autodesk software.
I got laid off from AEC CADCON as part of a merger, but found a home for the last 4 years at Richard L. Bowen + Associates Inc., an Architecture, Engineering, and Construction Management firm in Cleveland. As the CAD/BIM (Computer-Aided Design/Building Information Modeling) Manager at RLBA, it was my pleasure to develop Building Information Modeling standards; create custom Revit content for Architects, Structural Engineers, and MEP Engineers; train employees on BIM concepts and the use of Revit; and generally troubleshoot AutoCAD, Revit, and other software. I also worked on ways to use Revit to make LEED calculations and documentation easier and less time-consuming for the Architects and Engineers working on a project. I also wrote a few utility functions using the Revit Application Programming Interface (API).
On the side, I served as Technical Editor for a book called Green BIM, by Eddy Krygiel and Brad Nies. You can see me listed in the tiny print on the copyright page.
While I enjoyed pretty much every aspect of what I did at RLBA, I got laid off in early July 2010. I genuinely enjoyed my duties teaching/training, solving problems and troubleshooting, creating content, and doing programming related to graphics or modeling. I think it fit my personality: I hate it when the software or circumstances "win" by stumping me. I am looking for a chance to continue doing this sort of work as a CAD/BIM Manager, Technical Engineer, Instructor/Trainer, Researcher, Content Developer, or Programmer. I have over 20 semesters experience developing course materials, and have a substantial amount of expertise with writing CAD/BIM related tools and developing Revit families.
