Who's going to wear the ugliest dress?

Many of you seemed to think Meryl Streep would dress to distress; 4 of you cast your vote for her. In 2nd place with 3 votes were Marissa Tomei, and Angelina Jolie There was a tie for 3rd place, each with two votes: Anne Hathaway, Cate Blanchett, Geena Davis, and Renee Zellweger Receiving one vote each: Tilda Swinton, Sharon Stone, Maggie Gyllenhaal, Amy Adams, Cameron Diaz, Bjork, Kate Hudson, Nicole Kidman, Penelope Cruz, and "Melissa Leo....because she hasn't had this much attention before." Votes were also cast for "Whoever Sings Best Song" and "Whoever wins Costume Design"

WORST-DRESSED OF 2009: BEYONCE KNOWLES, JESSICA BIELI also greatly disliked Sarah Jessica Parker's dress and would list it among the worst, but in the eyes of "E!" she can do no wrong. Other un-favorites: Amy Adams (my spidey sense is tingling! And what was that TUMOR around her neck?), Marisa Tomei, Kate Winslet, and Heidi Klum.BEST DRESSED: Natalie Portman, Taraji P. Henson, Tina Fey, Angelina JolieBut WHAT DO YOU THINK?

Participant commentsFrom Rachel:Okay, you have to add Reese Witherspoon to your "Worst Dressed" list - her dress was AWFUL!!  If you need confirmation, check this link. Wasn't too thrilled with Kate Winslet - it looked like two different dresses sewn together.  And someone needs to tell Sarah Jessica Parker that "Carrie Bradshaw" is a character, not her...Anne Hathaway (apart from being too skinny, and such HUGE eyes), Taraji P. Henson, and Natalie Portman were best dressed.  I didn't love Marisa Tomei's dress, but surprisingly, it wasn't bad.  Apparently, however, later in the evening, for the parties, she changed into something hideous though... (check one of the above sites for confirmation.).

Who's going to make the most annoying acceptance speech?

Mickey Rourke, 9 votes Sean Penn, 6 votes Kate Winslet, 3 votes Nods for annoying speech potential were also given to Angelina Jolie (2), Brad Pitt, Richard Gere, Amy Adams, "The Academy Spokesperson," "Whoever Wins Best Documentary," and "Whoever accepts for Heath Ledger." Also for most annoying speech: "A Costume Designer. I mean, really, who cares?" and "Foreign Film Winner"

MOST ANNOYING SPEECH OF 2009: SEAN PENN. First, let me say that he's brilliant and deserved every bit of this award; I so admire his acting ability and passion for his work. He got off to a good start with the "Commie, homo-lovin' sons-o'-guns" quip, but it quickly turned sour with the Penn pauses and politics. That's what we expected, right? SECOND-MOST ANNOYING SPEECH OF 2009: KATE WINSLET. Much better than her speeches earlier in award season, but still too gaspy and awe-struck. But WHAT DO YOU THINK?

Participant commentsFrom RachelThere really wasn't a bad speech this year - Sean Penn HAD to be political, as "Milk" itself is a political statement film, plus...it is Sean Penn after all.

What is your favorite Oscar moment in history? (List up to three)

Each with four votes: Jack Palance's one-armed push-ups (See it on YouTube) Cuba Gooding Jr's gettin' jiggy for his Jerry Maguire win (See it on YouTube) The Streaker / David Niven, (See it on YouTube) Roberto Benigni climbing over the chairs (See it on YouTube)
With 3 votes: Adrien Brody spontaneously and feverishly kissing Halle Berry, 3 votes (See it on YouTube) Each with 2 votes: Halle Berry's Best Actress win (See it on YouTube) Sally Field, "You Really Like Me" speech (she didn't actually say "really" but that's how we all remember it!) (See it on YouTube)
Each with one vote: Standing ovation for Morgan Freeman Denzel Washington's win for Training Day When all the screen legends were lined up on the stage at once (Late 90s?) "Rob Lowe and Snow White" (I didn't remember this one so Jen kindly provided the YouTube link, which prompted me to spend my evening looking up the other YouTube clips above!)
Julia Roberts' Best Actress win Christopher Reeve (See it on YouTube and grab the hankies first) Any musical intro by Billy Crystal (Here's one: 2004) Jon Stewart bringing Glen Hansard and Marketa Irglova back up on stage when the orchestra cut short their acceptance speech for best song.  Gotta give him credit for that ballsy move. (See it on YouTube)
No votes for these, but they're good stuff! Hattie McDaniel (1939 Best Supporting Actress, Gone With the Wind) Gerda Weissman Klein (Holocaust survivor, subject of a Best-Documentary winner) Dustin Lance Black, writer of "Milk" screenplay. Matt Damon & Ben Affleck's Screenplay Oscar

Tina Fey and Steve Martin Heath Ledger's family's acceptance The new format for the acting categories, with personal comments from past winners
The Aniston-Jolie awkwardness Seth Rogen and James Franco (Hottie!!!!) Those adorable little kids from Slumdog Millionaire
Penelope Cruz's speech

But WHAT DO YOU THINK? OTHER PEOPLE'S THOUGHTS ON OSCARS 2009:

From Rachel:

Loved Hugh Jackman, but missed more jokes about Hollywood, which Hugh, being an actor himself, can't necessarily pull off.  The opening number was sublime...however, the musical number with Beyonce was hideous.  Why?  Why! Loved the Ben Stiller/Joaquin Phoenix bit ("You look like you work at a Hasidic meth lab...") Biggest Oscar surprise:  Anne Hathaway can sing!  And that new actor, "Seymour Philip Hoffman."
The 5 Presenters Motif:  Initially, I kinda liked it, but as the night wore on, the idea lost its luster, as, by Hour 3, it just takes too damn long to go through the process.  Not something that the Academy can get away with again, I don't think.  I think it helped to clump some of the categories together without a break (like Best Costume with Best Art Direction).  What really didn't help:  see early reference to the hideous musical number... Loved the James Franco / Seth Rogan film - that was FUNNY! Will be interesting to see where the go from here - ratings were up by 13% over last year, so wouldn't be surprised if they wanted to invite Mr. Jackman back (his schedule permitting).

From Jon:

I am assuming that I came in last, since the only category for which I saw all nominees was best animated feature.  Is there no recognition for 'participation' or 'entry who clearly got no help from their parents'? I have to agree that Hellboy did have the best makeup.  I will go to the grave believing that Robert Downey Jr is the best supporting actor for Tropic Thunder.

From Laura:

Your coverage of the Oscars (and pre-coverage) was outstanding! I enjoyed the ballot, commentary…everything! Thanks for all the work you put into it and it’s so nice to know a kindred spirit with regard to this stuff!
