Proposal

My proposal is this: The complex systems reading group would start up again in the fall with a massive publicity campaign (in the PSCS seminars and PSCS-related courses, as well as email and web). It would have the form of a weekly student-run reading group, and the theme will be ``The Complex Systems Canon'' (i.e., those papers and books that someone interested in complex systems should be familiar with). The difficulty of the readings would be at the Scientific American level, as much as possible. The syllabus would be fixed at the outset and will not be altered unless absolutely necessary. Free pizza and independent study credit for reading group participants would be valuable, though not absolutely essential.

I hope that this proposal encourages discussion about the future of the reading group. I welcome amendments to this proposal, as well as alternate proposals; it would be helpful if they were written down and distributed for discussion. Any final decision about the fate of the reading group should be based on the consensus of the reading group participants.
