romantic meMy Intro

or...

Why I don't have a "What I Did In Summer Camp" Report this year.

me, renaissance garbWho I Am and What I Do

A short intro is probably customary at this point, however, seeing as most of my intros are... well... not short, then perhaps I should just say a bit about mylesf. Hmmm... [Ed. insert: I was going to correct that little dyslexic slip, but decided y'all'd better know the worst so I don't get flamed for spelling errors. Not that any of *you* would do such a thing... Yes, I'm slightly dyslexic, tolerably ADHD-ish while medicated, and extremely hyperactive (according to my "friends," even with medication. So there you have it.]

For many years I did the accounting and purchasing thing at the UM School of Art, which may seem a mite strange under the circumstances, but you know how imaginative and ethereal those artists can be, so it seemed only esoterically natural that they'd hire a dyslexic accountant. However, after a good many years there, and after running out of interesting new things to get into--er, do, I switched occupations in midstream without a canoe up a tree and took up LAN administration and network troubleshooting.

Which is what brought me to this current State of the Art (as it were). I work at UM's Network Operations Center (NOC) helping to keep the traffic on the information highway clear and smooth-running. My shift runs all night long, so one might say I'm a NOCturnal net-op... *snicker*

In my copious spare time, I'm a volunteer archivist for the UM Merit MacArchives, which means I get to work for free 10-20 hours a week, playing around on my computer, up- and down-loading and testing amusing and fascinating new programs by up-and-coming shareware, freeware and professional software authors, writing up index entries, answering questions, and fighting truth, justice and the American Way!--er, sometimes I get carried away...--and making all that grand stuff available to you!

And when I'm done with that, I relax with a soothing cruise across the WorldWideWeb, an exhilerating dip into the UM's electronic conferences, and finish up my day with an inveigling talk session with my husband who is downstairs waiting for me ... *heh*

You think maybe I've been working on the computer too long...? *heh* I guess you know you've been working at your computer too long when you get hungry for a snack and you wonder when was the last time you accessed your refrigerator; you wonder why you can't just sit there, nslookup the fridge's IP#, and then 'ftp' and 'mget' your snack even though you realize that the snack most likely will be corrupted by the download because you couldn't stuffit before you downloaded it.

You know for sure you've been too long at your computer when you wonder just exactly which encapsulation method might be used on a sandwich, and whether or not mustard or mayo would make a difference.

And you certainly realize you are too far gone when you find yourself wondering if the compiling will give you indigestion and bring your system down...
