Transportation and lodging

If flying, you should arrive at Detroit Metropolitan Airport (DTW). The airport is a ~25 minute drive from University of Michigan Ann Arbor Central Campus. Uber/Lyft/taxi are your best options unless you are renting a car.

The drive to/from Fermilab should take ~4.5 hours or so as long as Indiana traffic can be avoided reasonably well (by timing it so as to avoid rush hour).

We have two hotel “recommendations”, noting that Airbnb may very well be your best option:

“Hyatt Place Ann Arbor” at 3223 S. State St., Ann Arbor, MI 48108; phone: 734-995-1234.This hotel (which is not ideally located since it is about a 10 minute drive from Central Campus) is providing a discounted rate of $134/night. Please mention that you are part of the SBND collaboration meeting in order to get the discount. The hotel has a 7am-9pm free shuttle, which can take you to/from campus.

“Graduate Ann Arbor” at 615 E. Huron St., Ann Arbor, MI 48104; phone: 734-769-2200. This hotel is providing a discounted rate of $199/night. This is expensive--but you get what you pay for as it is ideally located walking-distance from campus and downtown Ann Arbor. Please mention that you are part of the SBND collaboration meeting in order to get the discount.

For AirBNB, you should simply search for “Ann Arbor” and specify the dates that you are interested in. Please note that the meeting will take place on Central Campus, which can be seen on this map: map

Food at the meeting

Light food and coffee will be provided during the meeting.

A collaboration dinner will take place on Wednesday evening (6/26; 6:30pm) at Arbor Brewing Company (Ann Arbor Brewpub location). We will be in the “Tap Room”. People will pay for their meal and/or beer individually--the food menu is here. The location is a 15-20 minute walk from the meeting site:

114 E Washington St.

Arbor Brewing Company

Internet access

The wireless network “Mguest”, accessible by anyone, is a fine option. There is also “eduroam” available.

Quiet space

Please let Josh know if you would like him to arrange a “quiet/private place” for any kind of meeting, impromptu or otherwise. There are a number of offices/rooms available for this purpose. Informally, please feel free to walk into the following rooms and utilize the space: West Hall 335, Randall 2246, Randall 4247, Randall 3246, Randall 4246. (Randall is adjacent to West Hall)

Food

There are plenty of good food (and coffee!) options nearby.

Comet Coffee. Sort-of-snobby coffee, but delicious!

Zingerman’s Delicatessen. This is a world famous deli, about a 15-20 minute walk from the meeting. The sandwiches are excellent, but plan on paying $15 for one. Obama described  the “#2 Zingerman’s Reuben” as “Killer”.

Jolly Pumpkin Brewery. Really delicious in-house beer and good food too!

Arbor Brewing Company. Really delicious in-house beer and good food too!

Aventura. Good Spanish Tapas place. A faculty favorite.

Frita Batidos. Delicious Cuban-style sandwiches and smoothies. Highly recommended.

Krazy Jim’s Blimpy Burger. A local favorite burger place. As they say, “The only healthy thing on the menu is water”. Get onion rings with your burger.

Fleetwood Diner. A classic diner and another local favorite.

Ashley’s. Good bar near the meeting site.

Biercamp. A great lunch spot. They serve fantastic brats and pulled pork sandwiches. There is parking in the back.

Pacific Rim. Good spot for a nice, albeit somewhat expensive, dinner. A faculty favorite.

Tomokun. Good ramen spot.

The Last Word: Very hip bar/speakeasy--so hip that there is no sign on the door. Live jazz on Thursdays.

Savas: Another faculty ‘go-to’ for lunch/dinner.

Espresso Royale and Starbucks are also close by the meeting site. Chain restaurants close by include Chipotle, Noodles and Company, Buffalo Wild Wings, Pot Belly, Jimmy John’s, and Subway.

Fun stuff to do

You might consider going for a walk/hike/jog here .

Walking around campus will be quite pleasant, especially since it is Summer. The “Law Quad” is generally considered the prettiest part of campus. You might also check out the Art Museum and Natural History Museum, both on Central Campus and free.

The engineering campus is a short drive or bus ride away. There is lots of interesting stuff up there, including the wave field .

I’m not sure if anyone is bringing their kids, but I should mention that Ann Arbor has a great museum for little ones: Hands-On Museum.

The Hill Auditorium is a famous place to see a concert. The event schedule is here: schedule . It looks like there are concerts scheduled for 6/24 and 6/25.

Ann Arbor Summer Fest will be going on for the entire meeting. There are many planned events, including concerts, within easy walking distance from Central Campus. Check here
