Reader comments:
TEMPTING FORTUNE is weakest of the Malloren series, so far. Bryght Malloren was an interesting enough character. He was smart, witty, handsome and dashing which made his inexplicable attraction to the prudish, incredibly stubborn and obtuse heroine, Portia St. Claire unbelievable. Portia, as well as her nere-do-well brother became very tiresome quite early. Why Portia was so set against Bryght was explained early but he proved over and over again how sincere he was, so Portia's extreme reluctance to be helped by him and his family was silly. The interesting plot points involved secondary characters, like the rest of the Mallorens (Rothgar in particular) and Fort. I wanted to read more about them. I hope Ms. Beverley's next Malloren book (Elf & Fort) is as good and engaging as some of Beverley's other work. I look forward to it. (K.G., 1-8-97) I really liked the hero, Bryght, although I found the heroine rather irritating. I'm looking foward to the next book on the Mallorens. (K.F., 10-24-96) Though the heroine drove me crazy, I liked this book. I thought Jo did a decent job of dealing with the effects of gambling on a family. (J.S., 6-28-96) Though it had its moments, overall there was a bit too much perversion for my tastes. Beverley, like Putney, has a tendency to resort at times to excessively melodramatic plot. (E.P., 5-21-96) I thoroughly enjoyed this book. (P.C., 4-20-96) Though I was able to finish this book, it was a very irritating read. I couldn't understand what the hero saw in the heroine. The hero and heroine didn't spend enough page-time together, and the time they spent apart was very dull. (M.M., 12-11-95) I love the Mallorens. Can't wait for the next book. (B.B., 9-10-95) I really enjoyed this book, it was a real page turner. Jo Beverley is an expert at building and sustaining tension between the hero and the heroine. (T.E., 8-19-95)
