- Reader comments:
- Chesney can be funny, but she's usually quite flimsy, and her most recent books have been quite childish. This one was nothing special; I'd say her best are PRETTY POLLY, AT THE SIGN OF THE GOLDEN PINEAPPLE, MINERVA and the other books in that series, the books in the HOUSE FOR THE SEASON series, and LADY FORTESCUE STEPS OUT (the rest of this series peters out and gets very silly at the end); also some of the Edwardian romances she wrote under the pseudonym Jennie Tremayne. Given the recent price increases in series Regencies, flimsy writers like Chesney (and Joan Smith and Elizabeth Mansfield) may lose readers who feel they have been ripped off. (E.P., 10-30-96)
