Reader comments:
Hilarious and touching. (P.M., 1-21-98) I have to dissent. I love humourous romances, so I had to try SEP. Unfortunately, I just couldn't find humor in supposedly intelligent people acting like children. Very immature children. There were a few laughs, but overall, it was almost painful to read. (T.H., 6-1-97) This was the first book I've read by SEP, and I really enjoyed it. I almost called in sick just so I could stay home and finish it. Now, I'm looking for some of her other books. Way to go SEP! (C.G.I., 5-8-97) I loved this book! It was the first SEP that I'd ever read. I enjoyed every second of the book. I went right out and bought another book of hers. I thought Jane and Cal were wonderful charachters. I'm waiting impatiently for Gabe's story and I would like to see her write one about Ethan and Kevin Tucker. I'm anxious to read all of SEP's novels and I recommend them to anyone who has never been fortunate enough to read one. I love SEP! (L.W., 4-27-97) SEP makes me laugh out loud! (The escort backfiring seemed perfect!) I so enjoy her books - this book turned me on to her, now I've found "Heaven, Texas" and "It had to be you", am looking high and low for her others! I hope she follows up with Kevin Tucker's story!! (D.L.P., 4-7-97) A great SEP's book; I enjoyed more than any of the others and they were all very good. This one just seemed to gel better: the humor, the plot, the character development both between the h/h but also the conflict between his parents and throw in the gorgeous reverend brother and feisty grandma it was wonderful. (Y.P., 3-29-97) Although I rated this book better than average, it is better than the average romance! However, in terms on S.E.P. it found it to be lacking! It can't even compare to KISS AN ANGEL & IT HAD TO BE YOU! Although parts of it were funny, it wasn't as consistently hilarious as her previous books! But I would still recommend it on the basis that S.E.P. is just such a darn good writer! (L.O., 3-19-97) I loved it, when I got it I absolutely could not put it down. (R.F., 3-16-97) NOBODY'S BABY BUT MINE is the first book I've read by S.E.Phillips. I'm very glad I did. The premise of the story, genius Physics professor sleeping with tough-guy football player (not once but *twice*) to get pregnant, is pretty farfetched. But I got over that quickly because Ms. Phillips' writing style is so witty and smart. The secondary characters (Cal's family) added depth to the plot and were very well written (I'd read Ethan's story in a minute). I really enjoyed this book and probably won't hesitate to read Ms. Phillips' work in the future. (K.G., 3-12-97) This book brought to mind the extent some women will go through to have a baby, so that not all fathers abandon their children but have no choice. However the reality of Jane's character is reminiscent of myself and Cal's willingness to do the right thing no matter what the cost also paints the other side of men. Some do make the right decision for the child. (S.J., 3-11-97) After reading all the comments on this site I expected to be bowled over by the book. But, although readable, I found it ultimately dull. Too conservative and full of Christian Family Values for my taste. I also didn't think that the heroine who was supposed to be spectacularly brilliant showed any signs of intellectual prowess. And the hero had nothing more to recommend him than he had a good body and liked a good fight. I admit that the beginning was laugh-out-loud funny. But I wouldn't pass this along to any of my friends. (L.F., 3-8-97) This book was excellent. I thought it was the perfect balance of romance and sexual scenes wiithout going overboard on either. I would recommend it to everyone who loves a good romantic story! (J.A.D., 3-7-97) That made three of Ms. Phillips books that I have read. I finally located others in used book stores. I am still trying to locate: GLITTER BABY and RISEN GLORY. I am presently reading HONEYMOON. Hurry and put out more. Thanks for wonderful storylines that make me hate for the book to be finished. (S.T., 1-30-97) There are several things that I especially enjoyed about this book. First, I appreciated Cal's family. Ever notice how often the hero or heroine's family is full of a bunch of dysfunctional jerks, except maybe the grandparents? I found all of Cal's family, except the errant brother who I'm sure she'll work on next, to be sincere and well-adjusted. How refreshing: they weren't perfect or evil, just real. I also love the way that Phillips changes her settings and occupations from novel to novel (although she does love pro football!) When I read one of her books, I feel as if I can expect to learn something I didn't know about before. And, I don't have to think real hard to do so. In this book, she managed to make complex science and quarks palatable. Also, I have a tender heart for the Smokey Mountains and loved seeing this familiar landscape through her eyes. Perhaps the thing I appreciate the most is that she's a master at dropping in those seemingly insignificant details---things that ARE so significant to women--I can still see that hideous rose wall paper in my mind and know I would have hated it too! I could go on and on, but for me, her books are like water through my fingers, I look up only to regret I've already finished another. *sigh* (E.J.P., 1-29-97) This was one of the funniest books that I have read in a long time. (C.L., 1-23-97) A delightful book! Hysterically funny, with a far more appealing hero and heroine, in my opinion, than in HEAVEN, TEXAS, and IT HAD TO BE YOU. Unlike all too many romance writers nowadays, Phillips just keep getting BETTER and BETTER! (E.P., 1-23-97)
