Reader comments:
I anxiously await every Carla Kelly book and this one did not disappoint. (P.H., 1-26-98) My word for this book is charming. It's captivating, but not cloying or unrealistic. The hero, with all his insecurities, is particularly nicely done, and I loved the fact that the heroine's previous marriage was good and presented that way. A very enjoyable read. ml (M.L.N., 6-2-97) Great book. Realistic characters. Interesting turns of the story. It has me looking for more books by Carla Kelly to read. (M.F., 4-6-97) Carla Kelly shows a tremendous talent deserving of a much broader canvas upon which to practice her art. I found this book wonderful in its description of its characters and its perception and treatment of human failings and frailities. Ms. Kelly is one of the best! and I look forward to every book she writes, because she never disappoints. (P.C., 10-21-96) Carla Kelly is the best and just keeps getting better! (P.C., 8-8-96) Is there any question why it won the Romantic Times Best Regency Award? Carla Kelly is magnificient and her latest, "The Lady's Companion," is even better! (N.J., 5-28-96) Kelly is one of the most skillful of Regency writers today, combining humor and warmth. She's especially good at capturing war weariness of male main characters who are veterans of the Napoleonic wars. This book would be top rated were it not for unrealistic prolongation of lovers' misunderstandings and other unrealistic plot weaknesses toward end. (E.P., 5-19-96) The thing I really enjoy about Ms. Kelly's characters in general is that they're they could be real people -- having flaws, but decent folk trying to do their best. Her writing style is lively, with a great deal of humor, but she knows how to dip deeply into emotion when it's needed. An excellent writer, and not in the usual mold. Mrs. Drew Plays Her Hand is a lovely romance, with a hero who appears quite ordinary, but does what heros do: come to the heroine's rescue. The heroine is a strong woman, but there is only so much that anyone can do when forced into a threatening situation. Overall, a very excellent book. (K.E.H., 9-11-95) This is the first Carla Kelly book I read and it led me to look for more. The characters and relationships are believable and human and very real. (K.C., 8-30-95) I tell *everybody* to read Carla Kelly. She will always do something different. Who else would freeze off the hero's toes? (J.J., 5-21-95)
