Reader comments:
One of my favorite regencies -- my favorite Elizabeth Mansfield. REally enjoyed the characters. (M.H., 12-22-96) Her Man of Affairs is special, especially for a Regency romance. Many regency romances get caught up in the balls and gowns, etc. - a sort of "weren't things better in the old days when men were men and women were women" mentality. Which can be fun. But Her Man of Affairs challenges that. The heroine is strong and smart, and the hero doesn't resent her for her skills, he admires her for them. Also, here's a story where the heroine actually marries "down" - she picks someone she loves and respects out of ideology, not because she'll get to live a wealthy, indulgent lifestyle as a consequence. In general, I enjoy Elizabeth Mansfield's books. (A.M., 10-24-96) I have only a few Regency keepers and this is one of them. Loved the hero and heroine. Super book! (M.H., 10-8-96) Delightful. Some of the book's themes are explored more fully in a later novel, To Spite the Devil, written by the same author under the pseudonym, Paula Jonas. (S.B., 8-5-96) I like the focus on a more commercial, business-oriented hero. Although the book was a bit flimsy, like most of Mansfield's, I enjoyed it more than many of her others. (E.P., 7-18-96)
