- this is one the best romance novels i have read. Catherine and Rex not
only find love but manage to redeem themselves in the process. as Catherine says"Love can be very, very sweet. Balogh makes it seem sweet indeed. (G.G., 2-3-98)
When Balogh is good, she is very, very good. The past indiscretion
of the young Catherine is contrasted with the present one of Rex,
along with the lasting consequences. This is marvelously captured, but
the real joy is the quick brushstrokes that create lasting impressions
in the secondary characters--Rex's family, Catherine's neighbors, the
village folk, her family-all carry great depth, which is rare in a
Regency. Please, please, may Balogh now write the stories of Rex's
friends--especially Kenneth, riding off to marry the woman he hates!

I always enjoy Mary Balogh. She makes her characters very believable. I like the fact that you can see inside the character's heads and see what they are thinking, rather than spouting off long declarative speeches. Too many authors have their characters give long, ridiculous speeches. You can really put yourself into this book, imagine what it would be like to be in the situation yourself. I've re-read this book several times already! (M.C.B., 5-27-97)
I enjoyed the book tremendously. It is a real keeper (especially since I suspect that the remaining three bachelors and the former fiancee will probably get their own stories...and I, for one, am looking forward to them! (C.C., 3-25-97)
INDISCREET is a very good book. Balogh is adept in creating
characters who are complex and flawed but sympathetic too. Catherine's
placid, dull and peaceful life is destroyed in such a way that the
reader feels it too. I'll never forget the vicar coming to her door
and telling her she wasn't welcome in the church. (I admit to getting
a bit teary-eyed). Rex more than made up for his reckless actions
by standing by Catherine, but at the same time, I was less than happy
for his stubborn pursuit of her. He caused her disgrace afterall.
I really enjoy Ms. Balogh's writing and continue to read her backlist
enthusiastically. (K.G., 3-14-97)
Excellent book!!!! A must read for Balogh fans! (K.T., 3-1-97)
I really love anything Mary Balogh writes, so I'm a bit prejudiced, but I
thought "Indiscreet" was excellent, bought a copy for myself and have encouraged
others to do so. Call me a mushpot, but this one brought tears to my
eyes. :) (K.H., 2-14-97)
I look forward to her next novel... (D.C., 2-3-97)
Renowned rake wants to dally with village widow; she refuses; circumstances intercede
and they marry. His dawning understanding of what his selfish attentions have cost her
and his recognition of the significance of that loss, and his subsequent attempt to
reinstate her to her former life -- with our without him --shows a developing love that
is deep and selfless. Great characterizations; a keeper for me. (M.P., 1-24-97)
Balogh has more or less written this book several times before, but she still does a pretty good job here. (E.P., 1-2-97)
