- Heaven, Texas is one of her best. I read the sequel, Nobody's Baby but Mine, and fell in love with Susan Elizabeth Phillips immediately. She is one of romance's best. Judith McNaught, Jayne Ann Krentz, and Susan Elizabeth Phillips are the queens of the romance industry. I love her and am planning on reading all of her books. :) (H.B.N., 2-5-98)
Ilove Bobby Tom...give me breakfast, lunch, and dinner, and everything that comes in between with that man! (C.T., 2-2-98)
I truly enjoyed HEAVEN,TEXAS. It was the third book of SEP's that I have read and I loved. I didn't have a problem with Bobby Tom. I thought he was a delightful character. I thought he made up for everything in the end when he escaped from jail just to go after her. Gracie was a great fun loving character and wasn't afraid to reach out for what she wanted. (L.W., 4-27-97)
While I did read this book all the way to the end, I didn't like it as well as It Had To Be You or Kiss An Angel. I never really warmed up to Bobby Tom, any man who is only interested in bimbats (conbination of bimbo and digbat) just isn't my kind of guy. I also had trouble with him not liking Grace until she 'transformed' from Jane Average in to a 'not number'. I found the secondary romance of his mother to be more interesting, as well as their characters more likable and more defined. When I recommend a SEP book to a friend, this won't be it. (I.B., 4-15-97)
I really enjoyed this book because for once the ugly duckling got the
fox. I look forward to reading her other books. (M.G., 2-4-97)
Read "It Had To Be You" and was hooked on this author. Couldn't wait for this one to come out. It's a great book. It's funny and yet real enough to make you believe. This one it a keeper! I searched all over for her earlier books and really had a great time with all of them. Can't wait to see her new one! (L.J., 12-23-96)
I am a Texas girl and I really do know the folks in Heaven, Texas! I loved this book, and have to tell all you doubters that Bobby Tom is for real. Wonderful romance, great humor, give it a try, you won't be sorry! (V.T., 11-16-96)
My absolute favorite SEP book. Those two will never have a dull life. Where are all the Bobby Tom Denton's in the world? This book nearly never comes into my store used. I had to borrow a copy from a friend when I read it due to its popularity and scarcity. (C.R., 11-7-96)
This book was a real letdown after "It Had To Be You." The subplot romance of Bobby Tom's mother was more interesting than the main plot. This book was a real disappointment and I hope that her new novel (featuring the quarterback first introduced in "It Had To Be You") is better than this one. Phillips is one of the best contemporary romance authors out there, but this book was definitely not up to the level that she exhibited in "It Had To Be You" and "Kiss An Angel." (R.I., 11-4-96)
Fantastic, funny, romantic it had it all (S.M., 10-19-96)
A friend lent me this book and I took it on vacation; missed all the mountain scenery on our way because my nose was so stuck in the book! Loved the characters, loved the humor, just loved it, period. (C.S.M., 10-1-96)
I am waiting for more from this author. She is one of the funniest authors I have ever read! (D.K., 9-25-96)
It's a simple story, but very touching. (Y.P.F., 8-24-96)
This was the second book I read by this author and I found it quite
humorous versus her Kiss an Angel, which I found a little darker (but hooked
me on the author). Can't wait to read the rest of her books! (S.R., 8-23-96)
This database put me onto Susan Elizabeth Phillips, and I am SO
grateful. This is a fun writer! You start out going "Oh, c'mon now"
-- I tend to agree with E.P. when she says that the Bobby Tom
character in this particular book was a bit much (what self-respecting
woman would even look ONCE at a guy who gives a MARRIAGE QUIZ????) --
but it is a credit to this author's delightfully intelligent dialogue,
intriguing scene settings, and general tongue-in-cheek attitude that
you hang in there until you literally cannot put the book down.
It is unfortunate that Ms. Phillips has an a tendency to go for
"The Big Finish" at the ends of her books, and sometimes that doesn't
quite come off. "Heaven, Texas" is no real exception, I'm sorry to
say, but it's still great fun, and I highly recommend it along with
all of her other books. Definitely a cut above the pack! (S.R., 8-13-96)
Nothing's ever really lived up to Fancy Pants, but this was quite close. I liked it way better than Kiss An Angel, which I think is her weakest. I didn't like Hot Shot either. But It Had to Be You, Glitter Baby and Honey Moon were impressive. Overall, this author beats Jackie Collins, Barbara Taylor Bradford or other big-name bestseller authors anytime. She's the only romance writer that doesn't bore me. (J.L., 7-17-96)
Terrific book...Gracie proves that a good-girl heroine can be fascinating. And Bobby Tom is a your Southern high school football player grown up. I KNOW Bobby Tom! (M.A.R., 7-16-96)
I've always loved Susan Elizabeth Phillips's novel - in fact, she's my favorite romance writer. Heaven, Texas is hilarious and sweet. (A.H., 7-3-96)
I didn't like this book as much as other reviewers here did. I admit that I have difficulty finding contemporary settings interesting or romantic, but I did like the traveling circus setting of Phillips' KISS AN ANGEL. Here, however, one has to contend with football and Texas, both of which I find decidedly un-romantic.
The aw-shucks small-town hero turned football player surrounded by bimbos (bimboes?) in a hot tub was definitely NOT a man I'd fall for, regardless of the secret good qualities he may later reveal; and the ugly duckling heroine who does fall for such was pretty tiresome. Then we go thru her predictable transformation with "the right clothes"--described ad nauseum. On the other hand, I DID like the secondary romance with the older characters; their scenes did have real passion, esp. the jacuzi one. I found them far more interesting characters and wish they had been the book's focus. I also did enjoy some of Phillips' humor and plan to read more of her, even if this book wasn't my cup of tea. (E.P., 6-19-96)
I liked it, just not quite as much as IT HAD TO BE YOU! But it was
still very entertaining! (L.M., 6-4-96)
Another awesome book by Phillips. She's the best; I can't put her books down. What an incredibly erotic jacuzzi scene! All her books are precious and hot at the same time. (N.R., 5-6-96)
Great book! The characters came alive and were thoroughly enjoyable. (S.K., 5-3-96)
Isn't she a great author? I've enjoyed all her books. (J.J., 4-28-96)
Funny,touching,Gracie Snow,Bobby Tom Denton...need I say more?!! (A.T., 4-23-96)
Ohhhh, to be Mrs. Bobby Tom!! This is the author I use to hook people on contemporary romance books. (K.Y.K., 4-5-96)
If you need a good laugh to escape from the reality of men in
this world - read this! (R.W.M., 3-31-96)
Very entertaining; worth reading, especially when you want a break from the usual plot scene. Phillip's best book is the last book you read. (C.P., 3-14-96)
I'm new to romance novels (at least since high school!) and I've been choosing books from your database. So far this is one of my favorites, and I'd really like to read It Had to be You, but I can't find it anywhere. (S.R., 2-26-96)
