- Strong, forceful tale that works quite well, but if you're a
historical stickler, this one may be a problem for you since it
plays fast with much true historical detail. But the remote tone
of the author works quite well and the characterizations are vivid.
It's an excellent read.

I agree with E.P.; it's not as good as The London Season or The Rebellious Ward, but it's very, very good. Joan Wolf has the vastly underrated ability to write about people who are so wrapped up in their perception of the world that they completely miss the most obvious things around them. Catriona in Ward was one example, and Kate, Countess of Greystone in her new book Deception, is another. I'm so glad Wolf's back writing! A Difficult Truce is a perfect example of a good Joan Wolf book, because it tells a vast story in fewer words than you'd imagine possible. Conflicts take sentences, but someohow you never feel you're missing anything. Wolf is definitely a unique voice in romance fiction. (S.M., 3-19-97)
One of several highly readable Regencies that Wolf wrote for Signet/NAL before she moved on to several highly praised medieval and Dawn-of-Man historical novels. Almost all of the Regencies were VERY good; I'm glad to see Wolf returning to the genre this year (with a new publisher, Warner). Were it possible, I suppose I'd only give this particular Wolf Regency 4-and-a-half hearts, since it's not quite as good, IMO, as her 5-heart Regencies A LONDON SEASON and HIS LORDSHIP'S MISTRESS. But it's still too good for just 4 hearts! (E.P., 1-23-97)
