Daniel Smolkin

Bio

I am a postdoc at the University of Michigan studying commutative algebra in positive characteristic. I'm also interested in connections with combinatorics and in symbolic powers of ideals. Before Michigan, I was a postdoc at the University of Oklahoma, and prior to that I did my PhD at the University of Utah.

When not thinking about math, I enjoy cycling, climbing rocks, and training my dog Annie.

Axioms

I cosign Federico Ardilla's four axioms of mathematics:
  1. Mathematical potential is distributed equally among different groups, irrespective of geographic, demographic, and economic boundaries.
  2. Everyone can have joyful, meaningful, and empowering mathematical experiences.
  3. Mathematics is a powerful, malleable tool that can be shaped and used differently by various communities to serve their needs.
  4. Every student deserves to be treated with dignity and respect.
