Courses Developed and Taught

ME 450: CAPSTONE SENIOR DESIGN AND MANUFACTURING EXPERIENCE
(2000-present; undergraduate)
Fall and Winter Semesters

A mechanical engineering design project course where the student is exposed to a creative but structured design process from concept through analysis to layout, prototype, and report. Projects are proposed from diverse areas of study and reflect the interests and expertise of instructing faculty and participating students. Externally sponsored projects are common. Two hours of lecture and two laboratories per week.

ME 589: ECOLOGICALLY SUSTAINABLE DESIGN AND MANUFACTURING
(2000-present; graduate)
Fall Semesters

Methodologies to model and reduce the life cycle environmental impact of design and manufacturing decisions. Topics include sustainable development, design for environment, and life cycle assessment with applications of concepts from economics, engineering, and ecological science. Case studies in product design; metals, plastics, and electronics manufacturing; transportation and energy systems.

CEE 260: ENVIRONMENTAL AND SUSTAINABLE ENGINEERING PRINCIPLES
(2004-present; undergraduate)
Fall and Winter Semesters

The deteriorating quality of our environment is a concern that more and more engineers are being called upon to confront, with designing for minimal impact on the environment now seen as a critical activity for many engineering disciplines. To understand how to improve environmental quality and to minimize the impact of engineering decisions on the environment, training in the basic concepts of environmental engineering and in the principles of sustainable systems engineering is needed. To practice sustainable engineering, an engineer must learn the fundamentals of environmental pollution prevention, life cycle assessment, and economic decision-making, while also learning to use these concepts toward the design of products and processes that minimize environmental impact. To improve environmental quality, an engineer must also learn about pollutant properties, health risks, exposure pathways, transport and transformation processes, and remediation processes. The overall objective of this course is to teach students the basic principles of environmental and sustainable engineering systems.
