Steve Skerlos is Associate Professor of Mechanical Engineering at the University of Michigan. He researches and teaches environmental systems analysis, eco-design, technology policy and eco-manufacturing.
Born outside of Chicago, Illinois, he attended the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. He received his bachelor’s degree with highest honors in electrical engineering from UIUC in 1994 and his Ph.D. in industrial engineering from UIUC in 2000.
Since 2000, he is Director of the UM Environmental and Sustainable Technologies (EAST) Laboratory. He has co-authored over 50 scholarly publications, and co-founded a start-up company. His research interests are environmental technology policy, the design of "green" products and manufacturing systems, and the development of sustainable water systems. He is co-director of a $2 million National Science Foundation project studying optimal greenhouse gas policies in the automotive industry.
He has grants and contracts with a wide range of industries and government agencies. He received the NSF CAREER award in Year 2000 and the UM College of Engineering Education Excellence Award in 2006. He and his students have received several awards and recognitions.
He serves as Course Leader for the Capstone Senior Design and Manufacturing course in Mechanical Engineering and as co-founder and faculty advisor to the BLUElab.
His personal interests include guitar, soccer, astronomy and flying.

I spent a summer in Germany working as an engineering intern.At first, I thought my project assignment was impossible. After some time I realized the project would be completed. It motivated me to seek hard, seemingly intractable problems. Now I study the tensions between technology, economics, and the environment.
