Some information about my work with Fuel Cells and Lithium Ion Batteries.

Fuel Cell Control Systems Laboratory at the University of Michigan

Systems analysis and control will play an important role in the development and commercialization of electrified drivelines and vehicular power electronics. In order to best utilize existing non-renewable and emerging renewable energy resources, highly efficient energy storage, conversion, and vehicle propulsion technologies are needed. The efficiency of internal combustion engine technologies can be increased through hybridization and vehicle electrification; however, in the future vehicles will need to utilize diverse energy sources to meet the growing demands for scarce resources. Therefore, efficient electrochemical energy storage and conversion systems will become the heart of future transportation. Developing and implementing battery and fuel cell systems at a performance, reliability, safety, and cost level that is competitive with internal combustion technologies depends on a fundamental understanding of how these systems function and how they are integrated into the vehicle platform. My research focuses on electrochemical energy storage (Lithium ion Batteries) and conversion (Proton Exchange Membrane Fuel Cell) technologies.

For my doctoral thesis I developed and validated models for control of Dead-Ended Anode (DEA) fuel cell systems. Using a DEA reduces the fuel cell system cost, weight, and volume because the anode external humidification and recirculation hardware can be eliminated. However, DEA operation presents several challenges for water management and anode purge scheduling to achieve efficient and reliable operation, which my thesis helped resolve. The Neutron imaging technique is used to visualize and quantify the accumulation and removal of liquid water inside the PEMFC. These unique measurements on an operating fuel cell taken at the National Institute for Standards and Technology enable validation of liquid water transport models.

myfuelcell

Currently I am further developing and applying neutron imaging techniques to validate models of the lithium distribution inside a battery. Historically, validation of electrochemical battery models has relied on measurement of the applied current and the resulting terminal voltage. However, parameterizing high fidelity battery models based solely on measuring terminal voltage is a challenge due to the large number of parameters. To address this limitation, I am developing measurements of the internal battery states to find unique parameter sets. I am expanding upon the neutron imaging techniques developed for quantifying and visualizing liquid water in PEM fuel cells to measure the concentration gradients of lithium across the electrodes of a lithium iron phosphate battery
