Career

Colonel Emilio Vega entered Starfleet Academy on Monday, January 7th, 2352 at the age of 18. His parents, both radical pacifists and isolationists, vehemently protested this decision, even to the point of organizing a protest in front of the Academy the morning of his enrollment. Col. Vega held to his original decision, however, and began his Starfleet career.

Cadet Vega chose the United Federation of Planets Marine Corps as his preferred branch of service, and was accepted once the prerequisite physicals were passed. Cadet Vega got along well with the other marine cadets, but the protest organized by his parents made him the subject of ridicule among the Federation Navy Cadets. Once they determined that this was a sore point for Vega, they siezed upon it and continuously goaded him about it. Consequently, the normal tensions and disputes between marine corps and navy cadets rose considerably during Cadet Vega's first year in the Academy. This brought the attention of the Acaademy Administration down upon the recalcitrant cadets, and although 2352 was the most violent year in Academy history, the administration believed they had everything under control (this was not actually the case. The cadets had merely become more adept at concealing their activities).

The rest of Cadet Vega's years in Starfleet Academy proved to be less eventful, although the more senior Navy Cadets made sure to properly indoctrinate the new cadets in an extreme dislike for the Marine Cadets. The Marines, not to be outdone, responded in kind. Both sides of the conflict were much smarter now, and the administration was comfortably (and perhaps purposefully?) ignorant of the covert activities of their cadets.

Cadet Vega, in a form of defiance of his parents' wishes, excelled in his academy courses and work. During his academy years he was at the top of his class of the marine cadets, and was competing for the top position overall with Naval Cadet Vernon Mason. The competition was fierce, all the more so because of the aforementioned troubles among the cadets.

During Vega's senior year at the Academy, Cadet Mason gained a slight lead in points over Vega. Vega was not able to overtake Mason, and so Mason was slated to be Valedictorian of the Starfleet Academy Class of 2356. On the night before graduation, all cadets went out for a night on the town. Whether by design or by accident, a group of Marine Cadets, including Cadet Vega, and a group of Navy Cadets, including Cadet Mason, ended up at a bar called the Whistling Pig in downtown San Diego (the fact that the bar was not in San Francisco gives support to the theory that the meeting was not completely accidental). Comments were made by Cadets from both groups, and the ensuing argument became quite heated. Witnesses (federation presonnel on shore leave from the U.S.S. Hathaway) say that a Naval Cadet threw the first punch. The marine cadet who was the recipient fell on the table at which Cadet Vega was sitting, spilling his drink on his dress uniform. Vega, who until that point had been staying out of the argument, as had been Cadet Mason, returned the favor, and sent the nearest navy cadet crashing into Mason's table. The situation rapidly degraded from that point. By the time the Shore Patrol arrived, not a single naval cadet was left standing, and the few standing marine cadets were attempting to carry their friends from the bar. When the S.P. showed up in the doorway, Vega delayed them long enough for the rest of the marine cadets to slip out the back of the bar.

As a direct result of this event both Vega and Mason were informally reprimanded, and though both still graduated with honors, the third ranking cadet, Marine Cadet Janina M. Stevenson, was listed as Valedictorian in both the program and in Academy Records. Additionally, the offending Cadets, at least those caught by S.P., were made to pay for damages to the bar in which the dispute took place

(As an interesting side note, Cadet Stevenson was also involved in the dispute at the Whistling Pig, and was knocked unconcious during the fight Cadet Vega carried her out afterwards, and then returned to delay the Shore Patrol. If Cadet Mason knew of Stevenson's participation in the fight, he made no official mention of it at any time afterwards. Comments during the graduation ceremony centered around the fact that the Valedictorian, Salutatorian, and a number of other Cadets broke Academy tradition by wearing non-standard uniform (sunglasses) to the ceremony.)

After the Academy fiasco both Vega and Mason were sent to remote outposts for their first duty assignments, on opposite sides of federation space. Apparently neither forgot the other, however, because on multiple occasions there were conflicts between marines under Vega and naval personnel under Mason during coinciding shore leaves. As both officers had excellent records the rest of the time, these instances were overlooked, especially as both officers were willing to split the costs for the damages.

This rivalry continued for most of their careers. During the last 11 years of their respective careers no conflits have occurred, but neither have they encountered each other in that time period.

Col. Vega advanced through the ranks rapidly, and earned multiple commendations for bravery, including the Starfleet Navy Cross. His early career was well documented, and can be looked up in most Federation Databases. His Navy Cross was awarded him after a conflict in the In particular, during his fourth tour he was involved in a conflict in the nuetral zone between Federation forces and Orion pirates. In a daring move, he transported with his platoon, during a break in shields, to the flagship of the Orion fleet and managed to capture it before the Orions could activate the self-destruct sequence. This marked the turning point in the battle, and the Federation forces managed to drive off the remaining pirates. His innovative tactics in this battle are now used as an example in Starfleet Acamdemy Small Units Tactics courses.

Col Vega's 7th assignment was as the Regimental Commander of the 16th Marines aboard the U.S.S. Valkrie. However, during the hostilities with the Romulans, Col Vega was seperated from his command, and after things settled his command was transfered to the U.S.S. Darryl Adin. (Yet another interesting note is that although Col Vega is still listed as Regimental Commander of the 16th Marines, the Darryl Adin is not capable of holding an entire regiment, and the 16th Marines seems to now consist of 4 squads plus support personnel). One is not quite sure just what happened during Col. Vega's last tour, but whatever it was was odd enough to have him assigned to the U.S.S. Darryl Adin, which is under the Command of Captain Stratton Nelson and Commander Charles J. Jakubiec, Executive Officer.
