What is Folic Acid:
Folic acid is a water-soluble B vitamin that can be consumed in two forms,
as folate or folic acid. Folate occurs naturally in foods, whereas folic
acid is the synthetic form of this vitamin that is found in supplements
and fortified foods [2]. Folate is responsible for the production and
maintenance of new cells. Pregnancy and infancy are periods in which
rapid cell growth and division occur, thus making folate/folic acid an
important contributor to this vital process. The recommended daily
allowance of folic acid is as follows:
| | Before Pregnancy | During Pregnancy | Lactation |
| Ages 19 and up | 400 mcg | | |
| All ages | | 600 mcg | 500 mcg |
1 mcg of food folate=0.6 mcg of folic acid in supplements and fortified
foods [2]. Mcg=microgram |
