HOW to use FTP (by Seema Iyer, UTEP student, Winter 1999)
For more info, see U-M ITD files on:
WinSock FTP (for Windows)
FETCH (for Macs)

Just for your own knowledge, everybody is given 5 megabytes of spaces on
the university's server which you can access via FTP.  It's particularly
useful if you use different computers throughout campus or even at home.
You don't have to use a floppy disk, ever!

But for our purposes, let me try and explain how to do this (with my
limited computer knowledge--if anyone else has a better explanation, feel
free to let us know)...

Each individual computer on campus is called a "client" which is attached
to the main server or "remote" univeristy system.

>From the NT machines in the A&AB computer lab, the FTP software is called
WinSock FTP.  here are some step-by-step instructions

1.  Start -> Internet Access and Reference Sources -> WinSock FTP

2.  a window pops up that has the following fields:
profile name
host name:   login.itd.umich.edu
host type
user ID:  <your umich uniquname>
password: <your password>

3.  as long as the host name is login.itd.umich.edu, all you need to enter
is your uniqname and password

4.  at the top of the window, click on the "Startup" tab

5.  Select a location in the initial remote host
directory.

6. then press OK

7.  you'll be looking at a window with the local system (computer's hard
drive) on the left and the remote system on the right.  there are arrows
in the middle to say which direction you want the transfer to occur.
