Projects

This is the last piece of my site that I am developing, so have patience.  It will be coming along soon!

There are a number of projects I have been involved with in my work as an educator and graduate student.  I am only going to include those which have some actual merit, rather than every class project I ever did.  Here they are:

Current and Past Projects:

Konawaena Solar Car Team.  This is by far my favorite, and the item I am most proud of.  While teaching in Hawaii, I had the opportunity to become the advisor for a group of students who designed and constructed a solar electric vehicle.  The following summer, a group of us took the car across the United States to become the first ever high school group to do such a thing.  This site provides information about the team, the car, the trip, and the project as an example of project-based constructive learning.  This is what school SHOULD be about!

"Shaping the American City" Virtual Course.  As a student here at the University of Michigan, I had the opportunity to work with Prof. Laurence Gerckens, a professor-for-hire from On-Call Faculty who just happens to be one of the best urban historians and lecturers in the country (not just my opinion!).  We are working to develop an Internet centered course on American urban development history.  This is a sample of our content delivery system as well as a paper describing our vision for the project.  Take a look - I think it is rather interesting!  However, consider that we had no funding as of yet to really come up with a full site.  However, we'd appreciate your comments!

Technology Planning in Education.  This is a site devoted to the issues of technology leadership and planning concerns in the field of education.  Primarily devoted to K-12 institutions, this site in one of my little attempts to make the world a better place, or, at least to help educators in their efforts to have a positive impact on the lives and learning of our youth.  This also happens to be one of my areas of focus in my studies and work with schools and communities.

Documentary of The New School.  This accounts for a big chunk of my life right now.  This is my dissertation project (I hope).  Here in Ann Arbor, a new pilot program for grades nine and ten was developed this past year and has been in existence since late August.  It is The New School, an alternative program which is attempting to address some of the concerns surrounding large, comprehensive high schools.  I am attempting to videotape the progress of the New School in order to better understand the processes and problems involved with starting a new alternative school from the ground up.  It's been a helluva ride.  I just hope they can find a way to keep going.

MAC Program.  Well, this isn't really a project in the typical project sense, but it takes a big piece of my waking life, and so I'll put it here anyway.  This is actually my job - I am an instructor for the University of Michigan School of Education.  The MAC program stands for Master of Arts and Certification, a one-year program designed to get students certified to teach in their chosen fields and a Master's degree to boot.  I am currently a teaching assistant, though I will be co-leader of the group next academic year.  I am planning on developing a site specifically for the group as a place to present information and assignments, present student work as a resource for all educators, and provide assistance to educators learning their craft.

My World - an on-line journal.  This is my weak attempt to foray into the field of electronic journalism.  Actually, it is really my attempt to preach my opinions and outlook on life to anyone who will listen.  I'm working with some friends who will hopefully contribute regularly in this endeavor, and I'd love if others contribute as well.  I plan to get this project going as soon as I get some more "pressing" issues (job, improved health, dissertation) in order.  However, you can see the spiffy title graphic and get a sense of what I plan to do for now.

Future Projects:

  • Finish my coursework and get my degree!
  • Make enough money to pay off my debts.
  • Take over the world!
  • Improve my social life!!! (i.e. actually get one)
