1477 Oral Antimicrobial Bandage: Effect on S.mutans and C.albicans

Objective: The aim of this study was to develop a antimicrobial bandage for use an intraoral soft tissue and evaluate their in vitro efficiency of the microorganisms S. mutans and C. albicans

Method: The bandage was made by a polymer with specific characteristics. This biopolymer is biocompatible, biodegradable, antimicrobial may be indicated for use in various segments of healthcare. The bandage was embedded in antimicrobial drug, in this case, the chlorhexidine (CHX) that is widely used in Dentistry. Five types of bandages were developed with the following concentrations of CHX: 0%, 0,1%, 0,2%, 0,6%, 1,0%  and 2,0%. These bandages were tested against S. mutans and C. albicans. The test of antimicrobial action of the bandage through sensitivity. The experiments were done in triplicate.

Result: The results were analyzed statistically, where were observed that the bandage with 2.0% CHX formed the largest halo of inhibition for S.mutans and C.albicans (25.0 mm and 16.6 mm, respectively). 

Conclusion: The oral antimicrobial bandage with 2.0% CHX was effective against S. mutans and C.albicans. More studies should be performed to evaluate their effects on other oral microorganisms. (Supported by: National Council for Scientific and Technological Development / CNPq / Brazil).
