Long-Term Clinical Evaluation of One-Step Self-Etch Adhesive Systems

Objectives: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the long-term clinical performance of five one-step self-etch adhesive systems (Adper Plonpt L-Pop (AP), AQ Bond Plus (AQ), Fluoro Bond Shake-One (FB), G-Bond (GB) and One-Up Bond F Plus (OB)), in non-carious cervical lesions.

Methods: A total of 98 restorations were placed among 46 patients with five different kinds of adhesive systems. Calibrated operators placed the restorations according to each manufacturers’ instruction. Evaluations were done at immediately after placement (baseline), 3 months, 6 months, 1 year, 4 years and 8 years recalls using modified USPHS rating criteria by two calibrated examiners independently, for marginal adaptation (MA), marginal staining (MS), post-operative sensitivity (POS), secondary caries (SC), anatomical form (AF) and retention (RT).

Results:

At 8 years observation, 54 restorations (55.1%) were evaluated (11 for AP, 11 for AQ, 13 for FB, 9 for GB and 10 for OB). The percentage of the restorations rated alpha at 8 years were as follows:

Conclusions: After 8 years, limited deterioration in marginal adaptation and slight marginal staining were detected for each system. The clinical performance of the restorations placed using one-step self-etch adhesive systems were clinically acceptable after 8 years.
