Objectives: To compare the dentin bond strengths of several 5th and 6th generation dental adhesives.

Methods: Extracted human teeth were ground to expose superficial dentin and polished to 320 grit. Five adhesives were compared, (n=10): Moxie 5th generation and Moxie SE 6th generation (Discus Dental); Optibond Solo Plus 5th generation and Optibond XTR 6th generation (Kerr); and Clearfil SE Protect  6th generation (Kuraray) to determine their shear bond strengths. Adhesives were cured for 20 seconds and each specimen was bonded to composite (SDI Glacier) following manufacturer’s instructions in a cylinder mold, d=2.3. After being placed in an incubator at 37°C for at least 24 hours, bond testing was performed using an Instron, and shear bond strengths were calculated in megapascals (MPa). Analysis was performed using ANOVA and post hoc Tukey test at 0.05 level of significance.

Results: The mean bond strengths, MPa, and standard deviations of the five adhesives were as followed: Moxie-5th generation 9.1 (2.6), Moxie-6th generation 9.4 (2.7), OptiBond-5th generation 15.8 (3.6), OptiBond-6th generation 15.3 (2.9), and Clearfil SE Protect 10.8 (2.9). The Optibond 5th and 6th generations were not significantly different from one another (p=0.73), however, they were significantly stronger than Moxie 5th (p<0.001), Moxie 6th (p<0.001), and Clearfil SE Protect (p=0.001), respectively. Moxie 5th and 6th generations were not significantly different from one another (p=.824). Clearfil SE Protect was not significantly different from Moxie 5th generation (p=.206) or Moxie 6th generation (p=.295).

Conclusions:

5th generation Optibond Solo Plus adhesive showed similar dentin shear bond strengths to 6th generation Optibond XTR.  Both generations of Optibond adhesives showed higher bond strengths than Clearfil SE Protect Bond, Moxie 5th, and 6th generation adhesives.
