Dear Colleagues:

The Dental Materials community is grieving the loss of the one who was IU’s “engine powering the machine.”  On September 21, 2014, Marjorie L. Swartz passed away here in Indianapolis.  Many of you will remember that Marjorie was the one who kept the Department of Dental Materials running during the decades that Dr. Ralph Phillips was chair.  She wrote significant portions of the textbook, was a primary grant writer and kept students like me in line for many years.  People like Dr. Ray Bowen (who developed the bis-GMA resin used in our resin composites today) have continued to ask me about her over the years.  She was recognized as a major player during a time when the path for women in science was a rough one to follow.  Marjorie was a significant mentor in my life – she routinely brought clarity to any situation we discussed – she will be missed.  Her obituary as printed in the Indianapolis Star:

Marjorie Louise Swartz

90, passed away September 21, 2014. She was a lifelong resident of Indianapolis (Wanamaker). Marjorie was the daughter of Fred and Lucile (Clark) Swartz. She was a graduate of Butler University and of Indiana University. Marjorie was a member of Delta, Delta, Delta Sorority. She served on the faculty of Indiana University School of Dentistry in research and teaching capacities for over 40 years. Marjorie was a member and honorary member of numerous scientific and dental organizations.

Marjorie is survived by many cousins including, Dale Clark, Judy Adams, Linda Fischer, Jerry Clark and Sandra Cook.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Indiana University School of Dentistry and/or Irvington Presbyterian Church.

A Memorial Service will be held Saturday, October 4, 2014 at 4:00 p.m. at Southminster Presbyterian Church, 9950 Southeastern Ave. The family encourages memories of Marjorie to be shared during this time. Arrangements are entrusted to Shirley Brothers Washington Memorial Chapel . http://www.shirleybrothers.com
