Kroger fundraiser
A painless way to support some neighborhood cause, be that
Thurston School,
Dolfins Pool, or other, is to use Kroger certificates to purchase
groceries. The more
households that participate the more we all benefit, and the more each
cause benefits--
hop on the bandwagon to raise funds for some non-profit organization
associated with
Bromley.
This program works as follows: an individual purchases Kroger
certificates--
each certificate costs $20 and can be spent at Kroger's (any branch) as
if it were a $20
bill--if you want to purchase $87 of groceries, give the check-out person
5 Kroger
certificates and you get your groceries plus $13 in change. The
non-profit organization
gets 5% of the total of certificates sold for each $5000 worth of
certificates sold.
Thus, Kroger wins, too--they get the use of the capital during the period
of time it
takes to sell $5000 to neighbors. This is a fund-raiser that lasts the
entire year--it is
particularly attractive because everyone wins in some way.
To understand how helpful these "small" amounts can be, consider the
following example. Suppose that a family spends $400 a month at
Krogers--that's $20
a month to the non-profit organization. Over the course of the year,
that is $240--in
the context of a Dolfin's pool membership, that is just about the cost of
a family
membership. So, if half the homes in Bromley belong to the pool, they
can raise the
funds for the non-joining half, simply by participating in the Kroger
fundraiser in
addition to joining the pool--an easy way to add significant support from
those who
already do support the pool.
Consider adding extra support to any or all non-profit
organizations you wish to
support--in the long run we all win! Having various causes offers
diversity in selection
while promoting unity in action. Strong support for all causes leads to a
stronger
neighborhood working together to support worthwhile organizations.

For information concerning Thurston School, contact:
Lee Ann Harkaway (761-8229) or Diane Hoffman (665-6944). Kroger gift
certificates
are sold before and after school on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday outside
the office
of Thurston School.

For information concerning Dolfins, contact: .
Sally Vandeven, 996-0652.

For the Dolfins fundraiser, coupons can be delivered to your door (in
exchange for
check or cash). Note that for this one, dedicated homeowners are
advancing significant
amounts of capital to finance this effort--BHA salutes them!

Pets
The Autumn weather is a wonderful time to enjoy the outdoors. Please
remember that loose pets can cause serious problems for other pets, for
small children,
and for adults; the City of Ann Arbor does have leash laws that apply to
dogs (check
with Animal Control for details). Please also consider the potential
public health
hazard to small children; remember to scoop whether the affected property
is private
land or City land. There are so many nice Bromley pets; BHA salutes them
and their
careful owners.

Dolfins Pool Marathon.
Congratulations to Irene Stock who swam a marathon of laps this summer!
Come join Irene and all the other lap swimmers at the pool next year! In the
meantime, consider the Kroger fundraiser as a way to supply needed
capital for
improvements, taxes, and maintenance to the pool during the off season.

Dolfins Pool Board
The Board of Directors of Dolfins Pool will have openings for new board
members. Volunteer service of this sort is its own reward; work together
with
neighbors to build something of enduring value to the entire
neighborhood. Get to
know a broad segment of the neighborhood; learn how a pool works; enjoy the
satisfaction of seeing tangible results from your efforts. Call Sally
Vandeven, 996-
0652, to volunteer.

Party in Bromley Park
The rescheduled National Night Out in Bromley Park was held on
September 8
(as per last BHA Newsletter). More than 40 Bromley residents showed up
on this
unseasonably cold, gray evening. Plenty of fine food--appetizers,
salads, hot dogs,
desserts, and beverages--as well as lively conversation, kept us warm
throughout the
evening. It was a good time to re-establish contact with neighbors on
the other side of
Bromley and also to meet new neighbors. (Neighborhood Watch literature was
available.) The spirit of National Night Out was well-served; we all
learned a bit more
about our neighborhood--thanks to all who put in so much effort!
