NEIGHBORHOOD WATCH

Jo-Ann Socha is Head of Bromley Neighborhood Watch. The idea, as
expressed by the Ann
Arbor Police Department, is to have two representatives per block. A
block, by their definition, is
determined numerically; thus, if I live at 2790 Briarcliff, then my
"block" is from 2700 to 2799
Briarcliff. This sort of definition clearly limits the territory a block
captain has to serve (receive
notification of calls to the police and issue written notification to the
block). However, it is the
case that some captains serve areas that are bounded geographically by
streets, rather than
numerically by intervals. That is fine, too; the City's designation is
numerical. Jo-Ann would like
to have a precise list, of who covers what territory, once we have more
volunteers (see article by
Jo-Ann Socha, below, for details of what's involved). Bromley has some
block captains but
needs more. The current captains, who have given permission to release
their names, are:

Myra Dennis, 2235 Prairie, 668-7383
Rachel Schottin, 2336 Prairie, 665-7237
Beverly Kraker, 2515 Prairie, 996-1968
Linda Petrie, 2627 Prairie, 665-8184
Jo-Ann Socha, 2782 Briarcliff, 663-3766
Mary Kay Barkley, 2890 Burlington St., 668-0599
Mary Ann Dennis, 2948 Sheffield Ct., 663-3172
Colleen Thurston, 2819 Briarcliff, 663-9413
Vivane Shammas, 2260 Prairie, 741-0122

If others who are already captains wish to have their names added, please
call Sandy (761-
1231), and give her your verbal release to print your name, address, and
phone number. If you
wish to volunteer to serve an uncovered area, or to fill in as a second,
please call Jo-Ann Socha
(663-3766).
Stickers are available for houses of block captains if they wish
display stickers for their
windows. A regular box listing current captains and their phone numbers
and addresses will
appear in each Newsletter and in the Directory. The first such box
appears this month.

The Importance of Being Neighborly--by Jo-Ann Socha, Head of Bromley
Neighborhood Watch.
Reprinted from the July, 1993 BHA Newsletter

It's more than borrowing a cup of sugar when you're in the middle of
baking brownies and
you've run out. It's more than having your dogs let out because you have
to work late. It's more
than a ride to an important event because you can't find your car keys.
Not that they wouldn't be
enough! But it's safety! Safety for our children, our properties and
ourselves!
You report it (to 911)--the block captains communicate it to the
regions they serve! We all
become lax at sometime and need reminders. Neighborhood watch does just
that -- neighbors
helping neighbors. Block captains conveying the message. If you aren't
getting the information
you haven't got an active block captain.
     There are a number of areas within Bromley that need block captains;
if you wish to serve, no
matter where you live, call me (Jo-Ann Socha, 663-3766) or Sandy
Arlinghaus (761-1231).
What's involved is the first thing that comes to your mind. Not
much but it's oh so important!
a. You received the call from the central office downtown notifying you
of a call to 911.
b. You communicate it to your block via phone or in writing.
This all that is required, although there are other ways we can be helpful.
Our goal is to have every area well-represented at our crime night out
party August 3, in Bromley
Park.
We have a great neighborhood--let's keep it that way.

CONSIDERATION AND COOPERATION

As we enjoy the rest of the summer, we might wish to remember to be
considerate of our
neighbors--blaring stereos and car radios, dogs running loose,
continually barking dogs, noises
from construction, lawn mowers and the like during hours when people
might be expected to be
asleep, are all irritations that defeat the effort to create neighborhood
unity. Mostly, these minor
violations of City code arise out of lack of thought; so, let's think
about our little actions, too!
