Thank you!!

To an anonymous Bromley resident who donated $15 to the roof fund of
Dolfin Pool--these
were the proceeds from a garage sale--what a nice thought! Thank you!
Consider, though--if
each of the 231 homes of Bromley could think of some innovative way, such
as this, to donate
even a small amount of money to the roof fund, soon sufficient funds
would appear!! Please
give it some thought, and help to nuture the seed that this anonymous
gift represents!

Community-oriented policing

Officer Tom Kolpacki has been assigned to the west side of Ann
Arbor; we will have new
community-oriented police officers. BHA is working constructively to get
a strong working
relationship in place, linking Neighborhood Watch to BHA prior to Tom's
departure. Naturally we
all wish him well although we are very sorry to see him leave; he has
been open and responsive
to citizen commentary. Thank you, Officer Tom!!

Children's Learning Fair

A Children's Learning Fair will be held at Huron High, under the
Arch, July 17 from 9a.m. to
1p.m. It is sponsored by Detroit Edison, Brinks Home Security, and
Dominos. There will be
games and information, provided by the Ann Arbor Police Department, the
Ann Arbor Fire
Department, Recycle Ann Arbor, The University of Michigan Department of
Public Safety, Life
Flight, and Huron Valley Ambulance Services. The Winners of NNO Poster
Contest will be
announced. The point of the event is to heighten crime and drug
prevention awareness;
generate support for and participation in local anti-crime programs;
strengthen neighborhood
spirit and police-community relation; send a message to criminals--let
them know that
neighborhoods are organized and fighting back. Rain date is July 18.

The Importance of Being Neighborly--by Jo-Ann Socha, Head of Bromley
Neighborhood Watch.

It's more than borrowing a cup of sugar when you're in the middle of
baking brownies and
you've run out. It's more than having your dogs let out because you have
to work late. It's more
than a ride to an important event because you can't find your car keys.
Not that they wouldn't be
enough! But it's safety! Safety for our children, our properties and
ourselves!
You report it (to 911)--the block captains communicate it to the
regions they serve! We all
become lax at sometime and need reminders. Neighborhood watch does just
that -- neighbors
helping neighbors. Block captains conveying the message. If you aren't
getting the information
you haven't got an active block captain.
     There are a number of areas within Bromley that need block captains;
if you wish to serve, no
matter where you live, call me (Jo-Ann Socha, 663-3766) or Sandy
Arlinghaus (761-1231).
What's involved is the first thing that comes to your mind. Not
much but it's oh so important!
a. You received the call from the central office downtown notifying you
of a call to 911.
b. You communicate it to your block via phone or in writing.
This all that is required, although there are other ways we can be helpful.
Our goal is to have every area well-represented at our crime night out
party August 3, in Bromley
Park.
We have a great neighborhood--let's keep it that way.

Dumpsters behind Plymouth Mall.

A resident on Briarcliff who grew tired of hearing the Plymouth Road
mall dumpsters being
emptied in the middle of the night subsequently videotaped the illegal
activity and contacted
Officer Kolpacki. A warrant that included a $500 fine was apparently
processed against the trash
hauler after a very cooperative effort by Officer Kolpacki. Further
difficulties of this sort might be
effectively dealt with in conjuction with the Community Oriented Policing
program; indeed, there
are others along Briarcliff with similar complaints. BHA has written a
letter to Plymouth Mall, as
well, concerning this matter and other matters associated with the Mall:
light positioning in the
parking lots and odors coming from newly-rented stores.

Insulation--reported by Dave Thurston.

The Thurston family of 2819 Briarcliff has recently discovered
asbestos insulating material,
apparently with a high level of asbestos, in their home. The insulating
material was found
around drain pipes going from the ground floor into the basement.
Individuals concerned with
this issue, and wishing more information about their particular
situation, might call the Thurstons
at: 663-9413.
