BHA NEWSLETTER--JUNE, 1995.

DOLFINS OPEN--BHA/DOLFINS ALL-BROMLEY PARTY A HIT!
The first of a series of All-Bromley parties was a smash hit at
Dolfins Pool on May
27; BHA donated hot dogs and some salads. These served as a backdrop for
the many
fine salads, desserts, and appetizers supplied by guests who were kind
enough to bring
a dish to pass. Thanks so much to all who participated. Come join the
fun at Dolfins!

WHAT DOES IT TAKE TO OPEN THE POOL?
In early spring, you will see your neighbors--medical doctors,
professors,
homemakers, and a host of others--sporting hipboots and heading toward
Briarcliff and
Prairie. No, they are not going trout fishing. They are, rather,
providing an incredible
service to the entire neighborhood.
Dolfins Pool is not able to afford to hire a clean-up crew. Each
spring diligent and
dedicated Bromley residents pump water from the bottom of the pool, using
a small
pump to lift the water through a hose into the gutter on Prairie. When
most of the
water is gone, yards of sludge remain. This sludge is loaded by hand
into buckets and
carried, by hand, away from the pool; this is heavy, dirty work.
Following the
removal of sludge, the entire pool is cleaned and washed with acid and
Lysol to
sterilize it--again, all done by hand by your neighbors. Then, chipped
tiles are caulked
and the entire pool painted. Only a small handful of people participate
in this annual
clean-up (that also involves many other activities). They do it out of a
sense of
altruism and out of a sense of caring for that part of their lot that
they know to be
separated from their immediate home. Certainly we are all much in their
debt; in the
future, perhaps we should also consider lightening their load by offering
our help, too.
Please remember to pay your $35 assessment; it covers taxes,
maintenance, and
insurance on the property. Also, remember to join the pool--come on out
and have
fun--get involved with this very nice group of people who have worked so
hard on
behalf of all the pool owners in the neighborhood!

KUDOS
A special thanks from Dolfins and BHA to Joe Mahowald and David Ager for
donating their professional expertise to matters involving the
infrastructure of the pool.
Their contribution is invaluable as has been that of Sally Vandeven for
her tireless work
at the pool. Thanks to them and to the many others who work so hard on
behalf of our
neighborhood.
After many years of service to the Dolfins Pool Board, Ken Reader
has resigned
from service because he has moved away from Bromley. Thanks Ken, from
the entire
Board of Dolfins and BHA, for your hard work! With Ken's resignation, a
slot opens
for a new board member. If you would like to serve your neighborhood through
Dolfins Pool--community service can be an invigorating experience--call
any current
pool board member or a BHA officer.

BHA AND DOLFINS SPONSOR NEIGHBORHOOD NIGHTS-OUT AT THE POOL
During the month of June, every Friday night, from 6p.m. until 8
p.m. is
neighborhood night-out at Dolfins. There will be free swim and free
food. Bring a
dish to pass if you wish, but come meet neighbors and board members.
Also, if you
wish, Kroger fundraising coupons will be on sale--(5% of your grocery
money is
returned to Dolfins by Kroger when you shop using fundraising coupons--it
costs you
nothing). As with the opener of Dolfins, this is an excellent
opportunity to get to know
your neighborhood. A cohesive neighborhood is a safer neighborhood.
Shop, eat, and
swim at Dolfins on Friday nights during June!

POOL PARTIES
Dolfins is available for rent for pool parties. In addition to the
pool, there is a full-
sized refrigerator and barbecues. The basic rate is a charge of $25 plus
a $100
refundable damage deposit. The basic rate applies during times when the
pool is
already open; pool members are not excluded during such parties. To have
a party
during times when the pool is not normally open, and therefore to reserve
the pool for
your party only, requires extra fees for lifeguards (dependent on the
size and duration
of your party). This is an excellent opportunity to have an unusual
party for a small
price. Consider not only parties for family and friends, but also
parties for business
associates, language clubs, bridge clubs, scout troops, and so forth.
For more details
on rental, call a pool board member.

POOL MARATHON AT DOLFINS, THE LAP-SWIMMERS POOL
Swim a marathon of miles--26 miles, 385 yards--at Dolfins this
summer and be
rewarded with a handsome, personalized, Marathon Certificate of
Completion suitable
for framing. The log for keeping track of miles swum, and a sample
certificate, is
posted at Dolfins.

DOLFINS WISH LIST
Each year the BHA Newsletter publishes a "wish-list" for Dolfins
Pool. Of course,
the Pool Board Members' primary wish is for increased participation from
the entire
neighborhood. More specifically, though, if you have items in reasonable
condition,
here are some things that would be particulary appreciated: lawn chairs
and tables,
deck furniture/games, hoses, vaccuum.

BOTTLE AND CAN FUNDRAISER A SUCCESS--THANKS, BROMLEY!
Over $175 in bottles and cans were raised to support Dolfins
Pool--cans and bottles
were collected from many homes on May 12, between 4 and 7 p.m. Dolfins
and BHA
thank the Bromley residents who kindly donated cans and bottles. The
process of
collecting and redeeming of cans and bottles was done by Sally Vandeven,
Bill E.
Arlinghaus, and Sandy Arlinghaus.

PLANT SALE--BROMLEY BEAUTIFIED!
Thanks to the many Bromley residents who took advantage of Dolfins
Annual Plant
sale. Baskets of impatiens and begonias, as well as geraniums, and a
host of other
annuals were sold by the pot and the flat. Many thanks to Joan Johnstone for
organizing and coordinating this time-consuming sale!

CLEANLINESS IS ITS OWN REWARD?
Thanks to the many Bromley residents who take the trouble not only
to clean up the
trash on their own property but also are kind enough to pick up stray
trash. Indeed, we
hear of one person who, when picking up trash along Huron Parkway, was
fortunate
enough to find a dollar bill matted down with the more obvious
superficial trash!

GARAGE SALE--30 HOMES PARTICIPATE
Thanks to Mary Ann Gasiorek for organizing the Bromley Garage Sale!
Overheard: many nice comments from people on the sidewalks about what a nice
neighborhood this is!

BOTTLE AND CAN RETURNS--A PHILOSOPHICAL PERSPECTIVE
To some of us, cans and bottles represent a few extra, welcome
dollars when we
shop. To others of us, they are strictly a nuisance (although hopefully
we appreciate
litter reduction). If you fall into the latter category, you might
consider it worthwhile,
in terms of service to your household, to leave your collection at the
curbside on the
second Friday of the month. Dolfins Board members will drive by,
beginning at 7
p.m. (during months with Daylight Savings time), for pick-up. The refund
will be
donated to Dolfins; what we seek here is a win-win situation!
