 MAYOR BRATER'S VISIT TO
 BROMLEY HOMEOWNERS ASSOCIATION MEETING--
 A BIG SUCCESS!

Mayor Brater visited the March 11 meeting of the Bromley
Homeowners Association. She sat, as guest of honor, with the
Board; Mayor, Board members, and audience participated in
discussing various issues of interest to Bromley residents. The
meeting was well attended--about 40 residents of Bromley came to
this meeting. BHA Board all agreed that the meeting was
extremely productive. Thank you all for coming, and thanks to
 our guest of honor!

In this meeting we discussed the following topics.
     1. Congestion. We discussed at length the issue of traffic
lights to help pedestrians cross Huron Parkway and to help cars
exit Bromley. The Mayor requested a list of priorities from BHA
from the entire neighborhood. You will be polled soon; please
respond. The Mayor sent a follow-up letter to Sandy, again
 mentioning a priority list.
     2. Huron Parkway facade--the City-owned land between Huron
Parkway and the sidewalk (including the sidewalk). Mayor Brater
communicated our various desires to appropriate departments
within the City. As a result of this communication, the urban
forestry division contacted BHA with suggestions as to what they
might do with this land. They, too, requested input from the
neighborhood. BHA has already polled the households directly
adjacent to Huron Parkway on Briarcliff, and it will poll the
 entire neighborhood.
     3. Lights in First of America and Plymouth Mall parking
lots. The Mayor brought a document saying that the Zoning
Department was working with Plymouth Mall and First of America to
come to some sort of workable solution. Apparently there are a
number of difficulties--the lots do need to be lit both for
consumer convenience and for effective public safety. Over time,
the lights can get out-of-synch from wind and other environmental
forces. BHA hopes that affected residents will let us know if
changes have been made that are satisfactory--postitive as well
 as negative comments are appreciated.
     4. We touched more briefly on a number of other issues,
including remodeling of the intersection of Prairie and Plymouth,
the danger of head-on collisions at Prairie and Plymouth in the
early morning rush hour, road surfaces, heliport (affirming BHA's
stance in opposition to any such possibility), Thurston Nature
Center, Dolphin Pool, and Sheffman Terrace.
Mayor Brater brought along copies of her recent "State of the
City Address." A complete text of this speech is included at the
 end of this Newsletter.

BACKYARD COMPOSTING--PRESENTATION BY RAY AIR FROM THE DEPARTMENT
 OF SOLID WASTE.
Ray Air presented an interesting and informative slide show at
the March 11 BHA meeting. Each home in Bromley should have
received, by now, a booklet called the Ann Arbor Waste Watcher
from the Department of Solid Waste. This booklet covers the
topics that Ray did at our last meeting. We all got to see, and
to have a sample of, the new thirty gallon PAPER bags for yard
waste--plastic bags will bo longer be accepted for yard waste but
they will be accepted for garbage. (Large thirty to thirty five
gallon cans marked with a "compostable" sticker are also fine for
yard trash--but not any that weigh in excess of 50 pounds.) The
large paper bags should be available at a variety of commercial
establishments. Note that paper bags are themselves compostable
whereas the plastic bags are not.
There are City telephone lines dedicated to questions about
 recycling:
 994-4175--Commercial recycling
 971-7400--Residential recycling
 994-2807--Trash and yard waste
994-3872--Home toxics and paint disposal guidance.

 NEWS FROM DOLPHIN POOL BOARD
Dolphin Pool Board will be canvassing the neighborhood for
assessments and memberships. An assessment of $30 per year is
the fair share for a single home to pay to defray insurance and
tax costs for this community resource. BHA encourages Bromley
residents to talk to the friendly representatives of the pool
board when they come door-to-door during the time of April 4 to
April 16. This is a valuable resource for our entire
 neighborhood--swimmers and non-swimmers alike. Recently I
visited a city of about 100,000 in Iowa; a neighborhood of
roughly comparable size had a similar pool. It charged new home
owners an initiation fee of $800 with a yearly assessment of over
$100 per home, written into the sales agreement. See how lucky
we are; mutual trust and encouragement can form far stronger
bonds than can the legal glue of sales agreements, especially
when all participate! Please pay at least your fair share.
This innovative, hard-working, pool board has come up with
 yet another interesting idea.
                      POOL MEMBERSHIP "RAFFLE"
Households that pay their pool assessments or memberships before
midnight, Sunday, May 17 will be included in the "raffle" for a
paid-up family membership to Dolphin Pool. THE DRAWING FOR THIS
RAFFLE WILL BE HELD ONLY IF THERE ARE 150 ASSESSMENTS/MEMBERSHIPS
PAID BY MAY 17. SHOULD THE DRAWING NOT BE HELD, THERE WILL BE NO
REFUNDS. IF THE DRAWING IS HELD IT WILL BE HELD ON MAY 20. This
 membership  will be transferable and will be valid for one  year;
thus, if an individual who is a non-swimmer paid the assessment
out of a sense of doing what is right and a fair share, that
person might then delight another family member in the
neighborhood, a friend, or a neighbor by presenting it to them as
a gift. Or, a person with a fully paid family membership might
win and transfer the membership to the 1993 swim season. The
pool board wishes to be reasonable and flexible; conditions of
transfer (such as no cash refunds of any sort) and other terms of
the detail of the conditions of contest (including issues
involving free passes) are available from the pool board.
Remember, though, at least 150 assessments/memberships must
be received by midnight May 17 in order to have a drawing. So,
this is one "pool" into which it pays to recruit your friends and
neighbors! Prior to the door-to-door effort, there were 35 paid
up--that leaves 115 to go. Send checks to Leonette Siegel, 2875
 Briarcliff.

 POOL BOARD MEMBERS:
Chairman, Ken Reader; Membership, Leonette Siegel; Pump Room,
Mike Banach; Secretary, Joan Johnstone; Treasurer, Colleen
 Thurston;   Swim   Team,   Joan  Johnstone  and  Marie   Kilbane;
Lifeguards and Concessions, Ann McNally and Mary Sorenson.

 SATURDAY, MAY 2--BROMLEY CLEAN-UP DAY!

Saturday, May 2, is the day of the neighborhood-wide garage
sale. BHA also encourages the entire neighborhood to make it a
clean-up day, as well--pull grass out the street in front of our
homes, pick up trash, clean out a flower bed, help a neighbor who
might not otherwise be able to do these chores, work with a group
of neighbors to clean up trash in a cut-through, and so on.
Support your neighborhood by getting involved on the day of the
Bromley Garage Sale and Bake Sale (more below).

 BY
 MARY ANN GASIOREK

Bromley Garage Sales Day will be Saturday, May 2, from 9:00 a.m.
to 3:00 p.m. To date, there will be 22 families participating; 2
on Nixon; 1 on Sheffield Ct; 3 on Aurora; 4 on Renfrew; 7 on
Prairie; and 5 on Briarcliff. To each garage sale household I
will distribute a couple of balloons to put near your address and
a map indicating where the other sales are located.
One large advertisement will be placed in the Ann Arbor News on
Friday, May 1, and Saturday, May 2. There is still time for you
to clean out the basement and join us. If you are interested in
having a garage sale, please call Mary Ann Gasiorek at 996-4633.
BHA notes that it supports Mary Ann in her venture and hopes that
 even more households will participate!
 -----------------------------------------------------------------
BAKE SALE AT DOLPHIN POOL, MAY 2.

During the time of the garage sale, on May 2, Dolphin Pool will
run a bake sale. To volunteer to bake for the sale, please call
Mary Sorenson at 668-6852. Pick-up is available for those
 wishing it.
 -----------------------------------------------------------------
 POOL CLEAN-UP SCHEDULE

Residents who use the pool might like to understand some of
the issues involved in maintaining it. Did you know, for
example, that a single replacement tile (around the margin) costs
about $5.00. Come and work with your friends and neighbors and
learn the intricacies of pool management!
     Clean-up dates are:

 April 25-26 (Sat.-Sun.), May 3, May 6 (Wed.), May 9 (Sat.), May
 14 (Thur.), May 16 (Sat.). Hours: 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.
 -----------------------------------------------------------------
 STREET REPAIR--Information from Leonette Siegel.
From May 11 to June 24 road renovation will be upon us (within
Bromley)--first the curbs will be fixed, then patched pieces will
be fixed, then the road will be rolled and flattened, and then it
will be paved. Naturally, we will all be slightly
inconvenienced, but our roads should be better when all is done!
Watch for more information on this topic. BHA thanks Leonette
for the effort she went to in obtaining this information directly
from an individual involved in the project. It was suggested
that BHA encourage the City, if it is not already planning to do
so, to install curbs with good handicap access.

 MORE PARTIES IN BROMLEY PARK??

Last year a neighborhood party was held in Bromley Park by
interested residents. It was apparently quite successful. BHA
encouraged that event and would encourage similar events this
 summer.

THURSTON SCHOOL CUB SCOUTS NEED NEW MASTER
 From Shari McConnell

Thurston School's Cub Scout Pack 160 is in desperate need of
a Cubmaster and several other committee members. If we do not
have these positions filled by adult volunteers (not necessarily
parents) for 1992-1993, our Pack will lose its charter. Thurston
School has always had a very active Pack but will be disbanded as
was the Cub Scout Pack at King School and other Packs in Ann
Arbor. The responsibilities are manageable when there are
several people to share them. There are many parents who have
been active in the Pack (den leaders, parent volunteers, etc.)
who are willing to assist the people in these positions so that
one is not "reinventing" the wheel. PLEASE consider
volunteering. If you have any questions call Bob Hubbard at 769-
0822 or Debbie Lloyd at 995-3734.
 -----------------------------------------------------------------
 IDENTITY CRISIS!!
Someone who lives on Prairie delivered BHA dues, in cash, to
Jim Henderson's home. A mixup in communications left the cash at
Jim's house, but no record of who left it. Would that party
please call Jim, at 663-2816, and solve this identity crisis so
that BHA Directory records might be correct? Thank you.
 ------------------------------------------------------------------
 PETS

Please remember to walk your dog on a leash--for your pet's
safety and for your neighbor's comfort. The BHA Board thanks the
many courteous pet owners in Bromley who are careful, not only to
walk their dogs on leashes but also to scoop after them.

 PLYMOUTH ROAD MALL POST OFFICE
How nice it is to have a postal substation within walking
distance of Bromley! Please remember to support it.
 -----------------------------------------------------------------
 YOUTHBANK
This list is compiled from data accumulated over the past
year. Some of it may be out of date. Please call Sandy at 761-
1231 to make corrections or to add names. BHA encourages
residents to use the YouthBank in support of Bromley neighborhood
youth. Inclusion in the YouthBank is not, however, a guarantee
of workmanship. We do have excellent reports from people who
have used the Youthbank, though. Support your neighborhood
structure by getting to know Bromley young people.

REMEMBER TO VOTE IN THE UPCOMING ELECTION, TUESDAY, APRIL 6.
BROMLEY RESIDENTS VOTE AT THURSTON SCHOOL.
 -----------------------------------------------------------------
RECYCLING SUGGESTION--not enough cans and bottles to fill your
container?? Get together with a neighbor and put out one full
container rather than two that are each half-full.

 BROMLEY HOMEOWNERS ASSOCIATION--QUESTIONNAIRE
THE RESULTS OF THE FOLLOWING QUESTIONNAIRE WILL BE USED TO
ESTABLISH A LIST OF NEIGHBORHOOD PRIORITIES TO BE FORWARDED TO
MAYOR BRATER, AS PER HER REQUEST. PLEASE TAKE THE TIME TO CAST
YOUR VOTE NOW AND TO OFFER ANY CONSTRUCTIVE COMMENTS THAT YOU
 THINK MIGHT BE USEFUL.
WHEN YOU ARE ASKED TO RANK ORDER YOUR PREFERENCE, PLEASE USE
THE NUMBER 1 TO INDICATE YOUR FIRST CHOICE, 2 TO REPRESENT YOUR
SECOND CHOICE, AND SO FORTH. PLEASE FILL THIS OUT, EVEN IF YOU
HAVE BEEN POLLED BEFORE. THANK YOU.
 1. Light on Nixon--
 Rank order preference:
     at Nixon and Bluett
     at Nixon and Huron Parkway
     Comments
 2. Island to aid pedestrian crossing in Huron Parkway
     yes
     no
     Comments
 3. If yes in question 2, then also a no-left turn sign at this
intersection (for east-bound Huron Parkway traffic):
     yes
     no
     Comments
 4. Huron Parkway facade
Rank order preference--item number 1 is the City-suggested
choice (by the urban foresters who came and examined the area in
question). Other possibilities are suggested by Bromley
residents--the City may or may not find them feasible.
 1. Remove the sidewalk and replace sidewalk area and tree lawn
with mulch and appropriate plantings (presumably salt-resistant).
 2. Remove the sidewalk and replace sidewalk area and tree lawn
with a berm and appropriate plantings.
 3. Convert the lane of Huron Parkway closest to Bromley into
extra green space in which a berm or plantings might be placed as
 a buffer.
Before you vote, consider the following issues which have emerged
as a result of polling the affected households.
 1. If the contour of the terrain is altered a great deal, the
runoff pattern will be affected. This might be bad, or, it might
be good if consideration is given to already existing drainage
 problems in backyards.
 2. The location of the storm sewer in Huron Parkway may cause a
difficulty in closing any of it.
 3. Timing is an issue; possibility number 1 sounds as if it
could be quickly put into force. Number 3 might take quite a bit
of time. One might envision number 3 at some point in the future
as a spin off from number 1; that is, they are not necessarily
 mutually exclusive.
 4. There are individual households that enjoy the access out the
back and might therefore prefer an option that does not destroy
 this possibility.
