State Street Historic District

State Street Historic District

The State Street Historic District has only three or four surviving structures built before 1888. It is a younger district than some of the other downtown historic districts, but the two sides of State Street contrast nicely with one another; on the west are very late 19th-century buildings, and on the east, good 20th-century buildings.

Ground-level shop fronts topped by one upper story are the general rule in this district, but apart from that, the buildings are remarkably diverse. The modest scale and generous attitude regarding styles set a very appropriate character for this student commercial and entertainment center of the city.

The district does have its complement of grand structures: the Beaux-Arts Nickels Arcade and the Michigan Theater both suggest astonishing diversity and unexpected surprises that characterize the district.
