ATTENDANCE POLICY

1. Sucess in school is directly related to attendance.

2. The state requires that attendance be taken and recorded.

  3. It is the students' responsibility to attend school.
  4. The school has a responsibility to notify/alert the family of absences.
  5. The family has the responsibility to send the student to school and to notify the school of absences of their children.

Student absenteeism leads to poor academic performance and increases the likelihood of dropping out. Class cutting can be as serious as full-day truancy. Teachers report difficulty in maintaining their instructional schedules when students miss class. Counselors indicate that students fail classes because of excessive absences. Students who fail several times realize that they cannot graduate with their class and then drop out.

Students who have accumulated fifteen (15) absences in a class period during one semester, accompanied by a failing grade, may be dropped from that class and will receive no credit for it. Hourly absence totals include excused, unexcused and suspensions. Students who have met the above criteria in 4 or more classes could be dropped from school for the remainder of the semester.

Students will be held accountable for all absences, hourly and daily. Families of students are responsible for reporting absences. This may be done by calling the attendance office and/or by providing written documentation from courts, social agencies and for medical/dental appointments within 24 hours.

The attendance clerk will record and monitor excused, unexcused, school related absences and absences resulting from disciplinary measures.

Parents should notify the school within 24 hours if their child is absent due to a family funeral or any other extended illness or injury along with any other extenuating circumstances. Appointment cards for any doctors, dentists, etc. visits must be brought to the attendance office.
