The Nozewskis

The Nozewskis are my mother's mother's parents, Stanley and Antonina (nicknamed Anna). They came from the city of Krakow, which is in southern Poland. Both grew up in Poland and moved to America before meeting each other. (As mentioned on the previous website, Poland was not considered a country, so technically they came from Germany.)

Krakow is in the southeast corner of Poland.

Atonina: Anna Mroz was born on July 7, 1896. She came to America around the year 1913. First, war was brewing in Europe at this time and Anna's parents wanted to leave the country. They did not want to be involved in the turmoil, good thing since millions died during WWI. Her father was a rich man with a title. I never found out what the title was though. Anna's parents and her brother Franer and sister Mary, were all able to come to America and live a comfortable life.

Stanley: Stanley was born in 1897. He came to America with his family around the same time that Anna did. His family came to avoid the war and to have a better life. Stanley was about 16 when he came to America, and might have fought in the war had he not left the country. He got a job bumping out fenders.

Antonina and Stanley, together: I am unsure how Anna met Stanley. I do know that they got married in 1914, so it must have been right away. Stanley was 17 at the time, Anna 18. They meet somewhere in Detroit, possibly they were neighbors. Both of them spoke virtually no English when they met. Stanley Did in 1939, at the young age of 42. After her husband died and my Grandma was married, Anna moved in with my Grandparents and lived there until her death in 1970. From the time my mother was a little girl until right before she married my father, she shared a room with Anna. The things my mother remembers best about Anna are that she spoke no English and she was very strict. My mom would hide from her under the bed and Anna would pull her out by her hair. Kind of glad I never met her. Ouch!

Here is the only picture I could find of Anna. It was taken outside of my Grandparent's house. Sadly, no picture of Stanley exists.
