The National Forest Reservation Commission approved the Ottawa purchase unit 1928 and on January 27, 1931, the President deemed the purchase unit the Ottawa National Forest. After a series of extensions and additions, the total acreage rests at 1,743,303.778, which was much improved from the original forest's 253,551.07 acres.
