The final county criterion is proportion of youth. Due to a data limiation, the breakpoint for "youth" in the county analysis was 30, not age 25 used in the state analysis. The top ten list contains, in my opinion, surprising locations. The various regions are evenly represented across the list. The staggeringly-high proportion of youth in several counties (Riley County, KS, for example) suggest confounding variables undermined this measure. Kansas State University is located in Riley County and would likely account for a great deal of the 66% of the county under age 30. Thus, quartile analysis, again, will smooth out these outliers. |
