CRITERION 2: POPULATION DENSITY (PER ACRE), 1998 (Analysis by Quartile)

The population density measure for counties was limited to a traditional analysis (population/total county acreage rather than nonfederal acreage) due to data availability (or lack thereof). Therefore, it is not surprising to see New York City topping the list with several burroughs. Other major US cities round out the list, as they are counties in and of themselves. Simply normalizing based on county acreage was not sufficient to overcome the overwhelming population discrepancies between these urban counties and other, more spread out counties. Analysis by quartile shows larger regional trends that are very informative regarding the complaints of Western politicians.

The following map displays these counties against the federal land constraint (which is far from binding). As most of these counties are very small, you'll have to look closely to find them (in bright green)!
