Although southwest states like Nevada and Utah topped the list of state population growth rates, only two Western states are represented at the top of the county list. Nevertheless, Colorado contributed three counties to the top 10. This suggests that the states as a whole are experiencing tremendous growth, rather than several counties pulling the state's growth rate up. Analysis by quartile confirms this suspicion. The map below displays the top ten fastest growing counties since 1970 (in blue) and maps them against federal lands (in rust). Roads are included as they are an excellent predictor of the location growth takes. |
