DIVERSITY PLAN

The class will be designed so students of different gender and racial backgrounds will feel accepted. There will be pictures of scientists and researchers of every ethnicity and gender placed on the walls. Literature on these people will be set out for the students' own edification. The science literature will show individuals in a variety of science fields doing unique and creative activities, which will help break the stereotypical image of the scientist. Students will also help decorate the class and share their ideas about science and what it means to them.

The idea is to create a congenial setting where students will feel comfortable sharing their concerns with the educator. Surveying students to monitor their attitudes and continually talking with students about their feelings should lead to a better working environment. I will also monitor my behavior by video and then have other educators give advice on how to improve my instruction. Having discussions with teachers of different genders and ethnic backgrounds should help sensitize me to the needs of a variety of students. Also, attending all diversity-training seminars should improve my interaction with all of the students.

Lesson plans that are designed for this unit will, hopefully, engage the interest of all students. Many of the activities and investigations are done in-groups. For instance the cell city activity allows students to work together and share their ideas with one another. The focus on working in teams will help students realize that many science occupations require teamwork to accomplish their goals. My goal is to consistently be sensitive to the needs of the diverse student body.
