Description:
        AFS is an international, voluntary, non-governmental nonprofit organization that provides intercultural learning opportunities to help people develop the knowledge, skills and understanding needed to create a more just and peaceful world.  AFS Washtenaw is the local chapter of AFS cultural programs.  There are over 100,000 AFS volunteers in 60 countries around the world.  Its various education programs, Americans Abroad, Host Families, and Americans Abroad Urban Outreach, include high school intercultural exchange, and visits by high school exchange students to pre-school, elementary and middle schools.  AFS also provides merit- and need-based scholarships.

Description:
        The mission of the American Lung Association of Michigan (ALAM) is the conquest of lung disease and the promotion of lung health. ALAM has as its number one priority the prevention of lung disease;  that is, to preclude the development of disease.  The second priority is the cure of lung disease;  that is, to permanently reverse the disease which is present and which interferes with health. The third priority is the control of lung disease;  that is, to alleviate pain and suffering caused by the disease.  ALAM's programs include Family Asthma Series, Breathers Club, Asthma Camp, OAS, FFS, and Advocacy.  These programs serve schools, people with an interest in asthma education, and people with lung disease and their family members.

        Washtenaw Literacy endeavors to provide the opportunity for adults of Washtenaw County to improve their communication skills through free individual or group instruction. It reaches out to adults who need assistance, recruits volunteer tutors and provides appropriate training programs, techniques, and tutoring materials, as well as support programs for both tutors and learners. It also engages in activities which increase the community's awareness of the needs and trends in adult literacy on local, state, and national levels, which will result in readers with improved communication skills, increased self-esteem, an appreciation for lifelong learning, and the ability to participate more fully in our community.
