King-Crane
commission
The King-Crane commission
consisted of a
team of two Americans, Henry King and Charles Crane, who traveled to
the Middle East and attempted to determine which mandatory power the
indigenous people would prefer to rule over them. The commission
showed that the Syrian Arabs' hierarchy of preferences were as follows:
first independence, then rule by the Americans, then rule by the
British
and as a last choice rule by the French. However, neither the
British nor the French had any intention of being influenced by the
findings of the commission, and so the commission had little, if any
effect. (Hughes, 1999, 1146-48).
