The father of Ahmad ibn Tulun and a Turkish slave in service of the `Abbasids. He is said to have been included in the tribute sent to the caliph al-Ma`mun by the governor of Bukhara around 200/815-816. He rose to a position of command over the caliph's private guard. He died sometime between 220/835 (the birth of his son Ahmad) and 254/868 (when Baykbak had married his widow).
