DIMASHQ (Damascus)

The long standing capital of Syria, Damascus was taken by the Tulunids early in their reign. It was a central point for control over Syria, being the site of Ahmad ibn Tulun's conference of religious scholars in opposition to al-Muwaffaq's plans for succession to the caliphate in 269/882. In 282/896, it was in Damascus that Khumarawayh was assassinated, leading to the eventual downfall of the Tulunids. When the Qarmatis moved into Syria and conquered Damascus in 289/902, the `Abbasids were forced to respond and the succeeding conquest of Syria led directly to the full `Abbasid removal of the Tulunids from power.
