BUGHA al-SAGHIR

Also known as Bugha al-Sharabi (the cup-bearer). He was a Turkish military leader closely tied to the caliphate, he held the title mawla amir al-mu'minin (client of the commander of the faithful). He fought under al-Mutawakkil against Adharbayjani rebels, but later led a plot against al-Mutawakkil with several other Turkish officers. The assassination of al-Mutawakkil came out of fear that the caliph was looking to reduce the influence of the Turkish military class. Along with Wasif, he held power during the reigns of al-Muntasir and al-Musta`in. In 254, al-Mutawakkil's son, the caliph al-Mu`tazz, had Bugha imprisoned and killed.
